After singing the birthday song and blowing out the candles, the atmosphere became even more chaotic. Everyone began to switch seats, looking for classmates to chat with. The class monitor, Hua Feng, was eager to sit next to Shen Chunyan to talk, but she and Zhu Bing were quietly conversing with each other, leaving him feeling somewhat envious yet helpless.
As the joyful time passed, it left behind a mess of cups and plates. Laughter filled the air as people planned for later activities. Xia Yufei and Shen Chunyan didn’t want to join in and decided to part ways. A clever male classmate took the opportunity to say he wanted to kiss the birthday girl, resulting in a rush of people who swarmed Xia Yufei, leaving her cheeks flushed and delighted.
“Can we not go back to the dorm?” Xia Yufei asked Shen Chunyan, wanting to go to Liang Kang’s place.
“But Lin Lei might not be back tonight,” Shen Chunyan replied.
“Come on, just go with me!” Xia Yufei urged.
Shen Chunyan was an easygoing girl and agreed. Xia Yufei quickly returned to her seat to gather her things. Zhu Bing turned to Shen Chunyan and said, “I’ll walk you.”
“Sure!” Shen Chunyan glanced at him with a smile and said, “Old promise?”
Zhu Bing held out his palm in a gesture of affirmation: “Old promise!”
They all excitedly left the restaurant, bidding farewell to their classmates as they made their way toward Lin Lei and Liang Kang’s apartment. The night breeze was cool; Liang Kang and Xia Yufei walked ahead, occasionally whispering to each other. Shen Chunyan noticed the awkwardness in Zhu Bing’s eyes and playfully patted his back in comfort.
Before long, they arrived at the apartment. As Shen Chunyan and Zhu Bing climbed up to the top floor, Xia Yufei leaned halfway out of Liang Kang’s door waiting for them. Zhu Bing walked over, and she apologetically caressed his chest before giving him a kiss. Zhu Bing smiled but said nothing as Xia Yufei retreated inside and gently closed the door.
At that moment, Shen Chunyan had already opened Lin Lei’s room, with Zhu Bing following her inside.
“Have a seat,” Shen Chunyan said while rummaging through a small storage cabinet. “I’ll make you some coffee.”
Zhu Bing nodded in agreement. Shen Chunyan found Lin Lei’s coffee pot and grinder, selecting a can of Blue Mountain beans. Zhu Bing volunteered to help grind them, but Shen Chunyan stubbornly insisted on doing it herself. The two sat facing each other on the floor by a small table as Shen Chunyan turned the grinder's handle while her two ** swayed slightly under her thin shirt. Zhu Bing couldn’t help but stare, captivated.
“What are you looking at?” Shen Chunyan wasn’t naive: “Go get some hot water.”
Obediently, Zhu Bing picked up the kettle and went outside to fill it at the communal hot water dispenser. Soon after, Shen Chunyan finished grinding the beans but was still waiting for Zhu Bing’s hot water. She got up to open the door and saw him standing outside Liang Kang’s door with a steaming kettle in hand, looking dazed—probably having overheard something.
“Come on!” Shen Chunyan called softly. “Hurry back!”
Zhu Bing walked over sheepishly as she pulled him inside and closed the door behind them. She glared at him while taking the kettle from his hands, lighting an alcohol lamp as she muttered, “You’re so hopeless…”
The alcohol lamp quickly brought the already warm water to a boil. Shen Chunyan prepared the connected filter as the water level rose rapidly, filling the air with the unique aroma of Blue Mountain coffee. Timing it perfectly, she extinguished the flame and let the coffee drip down before pouring herself and Zhu Bing each a cup. She handed him a set of cream and sugar while she and Lin Lei preferred their coffee black.
“Did you hear anything?” Shen Chunyan suddenly asked.
“I heard… well, that,” Zhu Bing replied as he sipped his coffee.
“Are you upset?” Shen Chunyan asked.
