My father had been abroad for years, but he had quietly returned home a few days earlier, hiding in a hotel and busy with his script, without coming directly home. As I watched him toil and grow weary, his hair already streaked with gray, I often worried that he was burdened by thoughts of the family. He swallowed his pain silently, never daring to distract himself with concerns about us.
Yet this stoicism only drove a wedge between my father and me. This time he came back, my brothers were vying for attention, fawning over Su Qi, while I could only stand alone on the sidelines, my expression downcast.
My father cared for me in his heart; he would always pull out treasured gifts from his pocket, hoping to make me smile. The thought brought tears to my eyes as I looked at him with a pitiful gaze.
His face was filled with concern as he stared at the injury on my forehead. He reached out a trembling hand but hesitated to touch me. Suddenly, he turned his head and slapped my eldest brother hard across the face.
My brother stared in shock, his eyes wide open, unable to believe that our usually gentle father would resort to violence.
The Second Brother protested indignantly, "Father, Su Lin has made a grave mistake. As the eldest son, what’s wrong with my brother disciplining her?"
Those words turned my father's eyes red with fury; veins bulged on his forehead as he pointed at the Second Brother and shouted angrily, "How dare you say that! I asked you to take care of your sister, and look what you've done to Su Lin!"
The Second Brother retorted defiantly, "The sister we should be caring for is Su Qi! Su Lin doesn’t act like a sister at all; she’s always looking for trouble. No one in the Su Family cares for her, and she disrupts the peace of our home."
The eldest brother chimed in as well, "Father, you should ask around. Isn’t she always harsh on the servants and ruining our family’s reputation?"
Once upon a time, my brothers had vowed to protect me, but now they stood in front of Su Qi like sentinels, fearful that I might harm her in any way. They knew full well that Su Qi withheld my allowance from our mother every month and didn’t even leave me enough money for meals. Yet now they turned against me, accusing me of being harsh on the servants and bullying the adopted daughter Su Qi. To them, it seemed that even an unrelated servant was more important than I was.
My father's once-straight back appeared slightly bent as he shook his head in disappointment. "Have you all forgotten? It was because your mother worried about Su Lin being lonely that I adopted Su Qi."
"Your own sister has been hurt by you beyond recognition."
His words struck like thunder on a clear day, tearing apart Su Qi's facade.
"Oh my God, so Su Qi is truly an adopted daughter!"
"How dare she impersonate the daughter of the richest man? She must have the courage of a bear and the audacity of a leopard."
"Hmph, it's all because of those two brothers who spoil her. It's outrageous that someone would turn against their own family!"
The murmurs around them made the two brothers feel ashamed, unable to lift their heads.
Su Qi's face resembled a palette, shifting from pale to flushed, and finally she stammered to her father, "Father, you may not know this since you've been away for so long, but over the years, my sister Su Lin has changed drastically. She is jealous of Childhood Sweetheart Han Qing's deep affection for me..."
I let out a cold laugh and interrupted her directly, "Jealous of you? Have you lost your mind? I am the daughter of the richest man; why on earth would I be jealous of someone as insignificant as you, who is blind to reality?"
"You are just an orphan, spoiled by your brothers, trying to swallow up my family's fortune. This family is no place for you to speak."
I spoke in a low voice, "Since Father is back, then let's kick Su Qi out of the Su Family. Su Qi, do you want me to do it myself?"
The servants trembled as they glanced at me, hesitating to take action.
I smirked and turned to my father with sarcasm, "It seems that in this Su Family, my words truly carry no weight."
Father remained silent but nodded firmly at me, signaling that I could handle it as I wished.
With my father's support, I straightened my back and pointed at Su Qi. "Throw this orphan Su Qi out! The Su Family cannot harbor someone who bites the hand that feeds them."
After she was dragged away while crying and wailing, fearful glances fell upon me as if I were a ruthless villain.
Second Brother clung to Father's sleeve in tears, pleading for mercy for Su Qi, while Su Qi lay on the ground like a wilting willow.
Those servants bribed by Su Qi knelt down in fear of losing their backing, begging Father for mercy and asking him to spare the young lady.
Seeing Father unmoved, Eldest Brother hardened his heart and knelt down, threatening, "Father, I cannot bear to see her harmed by such a cruel person."
"If I can't protect Sister Su Qi, then there's no reason for me to stay in the Su Family!"
