“Shen Yi, your sister is in our hands. If you want her to live, hand over all the evidence!” A grim voice came from the other end of the phone.
My heart sank, a chill racing from my feet to the top of my head. Zhang Wan and Qin Hui had resorted to desperate measures and kidnapped my sister!
I forced down the fury boiling inside me and feigned calmness. “Where are you? What have you done to my sister?”
“Cut the crap! Destroy all evidence related to us, then publicly declare that everything is fabricated by you!” The voice was laced with threats.
I took a deep breath, striving to control my emotions. “Fine, I agree, but I want to hear my sister’s voice first.”
A faint sob came through the phone. “Brother… help me…”
My heart felt like it was being twisted by a knife.
“Midday, twelve o'clock, at the abandoned factory on the outskirts of the city. Come alone, or be prepared to collect your sister's body!” Qin Hui said before abruptly hanging up.
I gripped my phone tightly, my knuckles turning white.
I couldn’t just stand by and watch my sister get hurt.
She was my only family in this world.
Taking a deep breath, I tried to calm myself. “Alright, I’ll go, but you must not harm her.” My voice was low and hoarse.
I hung up the phone, my heart pounding violently. Forcing myself to stay calm, I dialed Zhao Qiang’s number. “Zhao Qiang, I need a favor; it concerns my sister's life.”
I inhaled deeply, forcing my voice to remain steady despite the slight tremor.
Zhao Qiang sensed something was off in my tone and immediately asked, “What happened?”
I succinctly explained the situation to him. “...They’ve kidnapped my sister and want me to go alone for the exchange.” I paused before adding, “I need you to follow me discreetly and be ready to assist at any moment.”
“Got it, Mr. Shen,” Zhao Qiang replied without hesitation.
At the same time, I anonymously sent evidence of Qin Hui's smuggling activities to the police. As I stared intently at the computer screen, the moment I pressed the send button, it felt as if a heavy stone was pressing down on my heart.
I knew this was a gamble—betting on my judgment, the police's response time, and my own luck. But for my sister, I had no other choice.
After hanging up the phone, I immediately drove to the abandoned factory in the west of the city. The winter sunlight streamed through the car window, bringing a slight sense of safety.
The next day at noon, I drove alone to the abandoned factory on the outskirts of town. The sunlight was blinding, making it hard for me to open my eyes, yet I felt an icy chill throughout my body.
I pushed open the rusted iron door, and the heavy sound echoed in the empty factory. Qin Hui and Zhang Wan turned at the noise, their faces twisted into sinister smiles.
Dim light filtered through the broken roof, casting eerie shadows on the three of them.
"You've come," Qin Hui said, twirling a dagger skillfully between his fingers, its blade reflecting a cold glint.
I stepped closer to them, my gaze locked onto Shen Yue, confirming that she was merely tied up and unharmed. Suppressing my inner worries, I feigned calmness and said, "Let her go. If you have something to say, come at me." My tone was icy and devoid of any emotion.
Qin Hui sneered and pressed the dagger against Shen Yue's neck. "Now you want to beg for mercy? It's too late! Hand over all evidence related to us!"
I pulled a USB drive from my pocket and held it tightly in my hand. "Let her go, and this USB drive is yours." My voice was hoarse and cold, my gaze sharp as a knife.
Qin Hui signaled Zhang Wan to take the USB drive. Zhang Wan eagerly grabbed it and plugged it into a nearby laptop to start checking its contents.
Seizing their moment of distraction, I quietly took a step back while subtly reaching into my pocket to grip my phone tightly.
After reviewing the contents of the USB drive, Zhang Wan's expression changed drastically as he suddenly looked up at me, shock and anger filling his eyes. "You actually..."
Noticing Zhang Wan's reaction, Qin Hui snatched the laptop away and quickly skimmed through it. His face turned ashen as beads of sweat began to form on his forehead.
At that moment, a piercing siren shattered the silence of the abandoned factory. Outside, police car lights flashed, surrounding the entire building without an escape.
Qin Hui and Zhang Wan's faces turned pale in an instant as their guns clattered to the ground.
"Qin Hui, Zhang Wan, you are under arrest for multiple charges including kidnapping and smuggling!" several officers shouted as they rushed in. They looked at me in terror, their eyes filled with disbelief.
I let out a cold laugh. "Qin Hui, Zhang Wan, the game is over." I pressed the shortcut key on my phone, sending the prearranged signal to Zhao Qiang.
The factory door was smashed open, and a group of police officers rushed in, quickly handcuffing Qin Hui and Zhang Wan.
I immediately ran to Shen Yue's side and untied the ropes binding her. "It's okay, it's okay," I gently patted her back, trying to comfort her.
Shen Yue clung tightly to me and began to cry loudly.
Looking at her, my heart was filled with mixed emotions.
"Brother..." Shen Yue's voice was choked with tears as she held onto my neck.
I softly patted her back and reassured her, "It's okay, it's okay!"
Turning my gaze towards Qin Hui and Zhang Wan being escorted to the police car, I saw despair and fear etched on their faces. I took a deep breath; there was no sense of pleasure in my heart, only endless fatigue.
Holding Shen Yue's hand, I walked out of the abandoned factory. The sunlight poured down on us, warm and bright.
I will protect you, Shen Yue. This is my promise to you and to myself.
