As I set up my stall by the roadside to tell fortunes, my biological parents found me. "You cannot marry for three years, or it will affect your fate," I said calmly to the "customer" in front of me.
They were taken aback, but I pointed at one of them and continued, "If it doesn't work, you don't have to pay. Would you like a reading, sir?"
The elegantly dressed woman beside him covered her face and began to cry. "Child, I am your mother. Come back with me."
I looked at them, a few words flashing through my mind: dark energy surrounds you, Doomed to Die Soon.
In the dilapidated alley, a rat scurried by as I heard retching sounds behind me. "Can anyone live here?"
I turned around, my tone indifferent. "Of course, I've lived here for over ten years." The Red Wooden Door creaked open as Song Qingmo's Mother pushed it aside. My gaze fell on Song Qingmo, the one who had switched me with her back then, nearly costing me my life.
I stepped out of the room with my simple luggage. Aunt Wang stood at the door, her eyes red and puffy, clutching a faded apron tightly in her hands.
Other neighbors in the alley gathered around, chattering away. I looked at them, feeling a mix of emotions.
"Miao Miao, this is a treasured Lapsang Souchong from your aunt. Take it with you for the journey," Aunt Wang said as she handed me a plastic-wrapped package of tea while carefully stuffing a few eggs into my bag with her other hand.
"And these eggs too; eat them if you get hungry on the road. Don't hold back."
"Aunt Wang..." I choked up and couldn't find the words.
"Oh dear child, if you ever feel wronged, come back. This will always be your home," Aunt Wang said as she held my hand, tears strea Song Qingmo down her wrinkled cheeks.
An elderly man with graying hair approached unsteadily, holding a neatly folded pile of old clothes in his hands.
“Miao Miao, these clothes may be a bit worn, but they’re clean. It’s better than having nothing,” he said.
A young woman holding a child also came over and handed me a bag of fruit.
“Miao Miao, these are apples I just bought. Take them with you to eat on the way.”
As I looked at them, tears streamed down my face uncontrollably.
Over the years, they had given me the warmth of home; they had supported me during my hardest days.
In contrast, my biological parents, after finding me, had done nothing but offer a few insincere apologies and shed a few hypocritical tears.
At the mouth of the alley, a black sedan was parked. Father Song, Mother Song, and Song Qingmo stood beside the car, looking disdainfully at the scene before them.
Song Qingmo gently tugged at Mother Song's sleeve and said weakly, “Mom, sister, isn’t it inappropriate to bring these things to the Song family?”
I shot her a cold glance but said nothing.
I could see the smugness and mockery in her eyes clearly.
Mother Song smiled awkwardly. “Miao Miao, you don’t need to take these things; we have everything at home.”
I withdrew my gaze and ignored her, turning to bow deeply to Aunt Wang and the neighbors.
"Thank you all, I will remember you forever."
With that, I walked towards the car without looking back and opened the door to sit inside.
At the moment the door closed, I seemed to hear Aunt Wang's sobs, and my heart ached in response.
Inside the luxurious villa
The crystal chandelier and exquisite furniture made me feel both unfamiliar and suffocated.
The servants came and went, whispering to each other, their eyes filled with curiosity and scrutiny.
Song Qingmo affectionately linked her arm with mine, inquiring about my well-being, but I could sense the hypocrisy and calculation behind her smile.
I sat on the soft sofa, holding a cup of hot tea, yet feeling no warmth at all.
I closed my eyes, and scenes of my master teaching me fortune-telling floated into my mind as my fingers instinctively began to calculate.
"The Song Family is about to face great calamity," I murmured as I opened my eyes.
Song Qingyao came down from upstairs and, upon seeing me, let out a disdainful snort.
"Oh, look at the country bumpkin. What are you calculating? When you'll fit into our family?"
I ignored him and got up to head towards my room.
The room was spacious and luxuriously decorated, yet I felt no trace of a homey atmosphere.
I walked to the window and gazed at the bustling cityscape outside, my heart filled with confusion.
I took out my phone and dialed my master's number. "Master, I've arrived at the Song Family."
"Is everything going smoothly?" My master's voice was as calm as ever.
"Not really." I briefly explained the situation with the Song Family to him.
"Miao Miao, remember my words: do not force anything, but do not allow yourself to be taken advantage of either. The Song Family may just be a trial for you," he said, his words carrying a deeper meaning.
After hanging up, I approached the vanity and looked at myself in the mirror.
With a bare face and dressed in a simple T-shirt and jeans, I felt out of place in this opulent room.
Taking a deep breath, a glimmer of determination flashed in my eyes.
I would establish myself in this so-called wealthy family in my own way, changing the fate of the Song Family and my own destiny as well.
I opened my suitcase and took out the string of prayer beads my master had given me, gripping them tightly in my hand.
