The cramped space was filled with his scent as Yun turned her head to look out the window at the retreating night scenery.
The two of them had not spoken a word during the ride; the car was so quiet that only the sound of the engine could be heard. Yun's thoughts began to drift away, and just as she was lost in her reverie, the car came to a stop.
Her scattered gaze gradually returned as she looked at the familiar neighborhood outside. Suddenly, she realized that she hadn’t told him where she lived. She didn’t ask; she just wanted to leave quickly.
In a low voice, she said, “Thank you.” She unbuckled her seatbelt, but perhaps due to her nervousness, it wouldn’t come undone no matter how she tried. A flush crept onto her delicate face as she added, “Just a moment.”
She tugged at it again but still couldn’t get it off. Frustration began to replace her anxiety—what a troublesome car! The man leaned closer, his long fingers brushing against her fingertips. Yun instinctively withdrew her hand, and he noticed. With his eyes lowered, he pressed the button to release the seatbelt with a click.
Yun blinked gently, feeling even warmer now; it seemed she hadn’t pressed it firmly enough before pulling at it. Jiang Shiyu caught sight of this and smirked slightly.
“Thank you,” she quickly said again before opening the car door and walking into the neighborhood without looking back, while the man’s gaze remained fixed on her.
It wasn’t until her figure disappeared from view that he slowly withdrew his gaze. His attention lingered on the spot where she had just sat; there were still traces of her presence in the car.
It had been a long time since he had felt her existence so clearly. Just moments ago, she had sat in the car, lost in thought, looking serene with her hair softly falling across her cheek—a scene reminiscent of times gone by, as if they had never parted.
Jiang Shiyu sat in the car for a long time before finally starting it and driving away.
Yun lived alone in Jing City. After living there for so long and saving up quite a bit of money along with what her parents had given her, she had managed to create a small nest for herself in Jing City.
An eighty-square-meter two-bedroom apartment may not have been large, but it was more than enough for her alone.
Yun was a girl who loved life. Even when she hadn’t lived at home for a long time, she would still make it cozy. Originally, she had wanted to keep some flowers. However, her busy work schedule and frequent business trips made it difficult for her to take care of them. Instead, she would buy flowers to arrange in her home, ensuring that even living alone wouldn’t feel lonely.
A few months ago, the flowers she had bought had wilted, and she hadn’t gotten around to cleaning them up. She tossed the dead flowers into the trash can, washed the vase, and filled it with fresh water before arranging the new flowers in it. Placing the vase in the center of the bar counter, a faint smile appeared on Yun's lips. But then she thought of Jiang Shiyu, and her smile faded.
After taking a shower, with the room warmed by the heater, she wore only a nightgown. With her hair half-dry, she sat on the small sofa in her room, looking at her phone. Qin Nianchu had sent her a message half an hour ago. She realized she had forgotten to check in with him.
Quickly, she typed a message: [Nianchu, I’m back.]
It wasn’t long before he replied: [I thought something happened to you and was about to rush to your place.]
Yun sent a sticker back: [Sorry to worry you! It’s late; you should get some rest after all that fuss! *sneaky smile*]
Nianchu replied: [It’s fine; I’m a pro at staying up late now. By the way, was it Jiang Shiyu who took you home?]
Yun paused for a moment, feeling there was no need to hide anything: [Yeah.]
Nianchu continued: [He hasn’t dated anyone; I feel like he’s waiting for you.]
Yun read this message without any reaction: [Nianchu, don’t forget? He wouldn’t stop for anyone.]
[Things are different now; everyone has entered society and is busy with work. Who has time to make friends?]
[He’s so dedicated to aerospace; with the Aerospace Research Institute being so busy, he wouldn’t let love interfere with his work.]
Nianchu replied: [Hehe, just mentioning it! Alright, babe, get some rest! It’s late.]
Yun: [Mm-hmm, goodnight.]
Nianchu: [Goodnight, baby.]
After drying her hair, Yun lay back in bed. In the darkness, her thoughts drifted far away as she tossed and turned unable to sleep. Her hand reached for the white bottle on the bedside table and poured out two pills.
Meanwhile, Jiang Shiyu had returned home and opened the fridge to grab two bottles of beer. Sitting on the floor alone, he drank quietly without turning on the lights; only the faint glow from the streetlights outside illuminated the room.
