After spending two days in Su City, everyone returned to Jing City to continue their work. There was a hint of regret among the group when they learned that the two hadn’t gone together, and they stopped talking as freely as before.
Yun Li returned home, feeling like she could finally catch her breath. She sent a message to Shu Ran.
"Are you coming over?"
Shu Ran replied, "I’m off to have some fun! You won’t see me around lately!"
"Where are you going?"
Shu Ran responded, "To Haicheng! It’s too cold in winter; I want to bask in the summer sun, ha ha!"
Yun Li replied, "Aww, I want to go too."
Shu Ran suggested, "Take a leave! Let’s go to Haicheng and wear bikinis together!"
Yun Li thought for a moment. Maybe she should take a leave? It had been years since she last traveled. She remembered seeing a classmate from Affiliated High School on social media who had gone on a solo road trip. It looked so cool. She wished she could do that, but her driving skills were questionable. Still, the idea of traveling alone was enticing.
Shu Ran sent another message: "We should spend the New Year together in Haicheng! We’re adults now; we need to learn how to celebrate holidays on our own."
Yun Li felt a rush of excitement at the thought. She had never experienced anything like it before, and this thrill felt like a form of rebellion. She immediately decided to take leave for her trip.
"I'm going to request leave right now! I’ll travel alone first and then meet you in Haicheng."
Shu Ran sounded a bit worried. "Are you sure you can manage alone? Do you want me to come with you?"
"No need! Didn’t you say we’re adults now? Adults can handle it!"
"Hey, you’ve already grasped the essence of it."
Yun Li laughed, imagining Shu Ran tilting her chin and speaking in a deep voice as she said those words.
"Aren’t you going to travel with senior He? That’s a great opportunity!"
"Why would I travel with him?"
"Didn't you two get together?"
Yun Li quickly explained, "No, I talked it over with my senior. We're still friends."
"Huh?"
In a rush, Shu Ran called her on a video call.
In the video, Shu Ran was lying on the beach in a red polka dot bikini, wearing sunglasses.
"Wait, what’s going on? You two hugged at the hotel entrance and you’re still not together?"
Yun Li was speechless. "Isn't hugging considered being together? You think a kiss on the cheek between friends is nothing, but a hug is something to scrutinize?"
"No, that's not what I meant! I just thought if you weren't together, then what was the hug for?"
"My senior said it was a farewell hug."
Shu Ran clicked her tongue. " senior He is so hurt he’s about to leave."
Yun Li chuckled again. "It wasn't that kind of farewell; it was more like saying goodbye to the past."
"Oh, got it!"
The next day, Yun Li went to the Team Leader's office to request leave. It was her first time asking for such an extended break after so many years of work, and she worried the Team Leader wouldn't approve.
She knocked on the door, and a voice called from inside.
"Come in."
Yun Li pushed open the door. The Team Leader was a woman in her forties with a sharp bob haircut. She looked up from her desk and said, "Yun Li, what can I do for you?"
Yun Li smiled gently and sat down in front of her. "Team Leader, I’d like to request some time off."
Upon hearing this, the Team Leader adjusted her glasses and asked seriously, "How long do you need?"
"I want to go on a trip; it might be a bit long."
The Team Leader nodded knowingly. "You! It’s about time you took a vacation to relax. You're almost thirty and all you do is work; you need to make time for love too."
Hearing this, Yun Li nodded obediently, eager to get her leave approved.
"Is one month enough?"
Yun Li nodded immediately, saying she only needed half a month off. With the New Year just passed, she would return to work after the holiday.
The Team Leader chuckled and teased, "You're quite the planner!"
After all, with the year coming to an end, there wasn't much to do. She just needed to focus on the filming schedule for this month.
Once her vacation was approved, Yun Li was overjoyed. At the same time, she couldn't shake the feeling that this month seemed to drag on endlessly. It felt like a year had passed in just a few days. When people found out she was taking half a month off to travel, they eagerly asked if she was going to heal from a broken heart.
Yun Li explained that there was nothing of the sort; she simply wanted to enjoy life and travel. "Don't spread rumors!" she insisted.
Half a month passed joyfully, and Yun Li had already prepared her itinerary, eagerly setting off on her solo adventure. It was the off-season for travel, so there were no lines to contend with. She took a train to Tibet, a place she had long wanted to visit but never found the time. She had hoped to go before turning thirty, and now that dream was finally coming true.
She had done her research in advance and packed headache medicine, medication for high altitude sickness, motion sickness pills, glucose, and more. Winter in Tibet could still be cold; although there would be sunshine during the day, the temperature fluctuated greatly between day and night, so she made sure to bring layers.
Before leaving, she told her mother and friends about her plans to accomplish this significant milestone. Her mother supported her and hoped that she would find a kindred spirit during her travels. Subtly and not so subtly, they reminded her of the importance of finding someone special.
The night before her departure, Shu Ran excitedly warned her that accidents could happen during travels.
"What kind of accidents could happen domestically?" Yun Li thought. "Isn't it just getting scammed out of some money?"
"You’re almost thirty; why do you think so simply?" Shu Ran replied. "I’m talking about encounters—do you understand? How long has it been since you’ve had any romance? Don’t you feel empty and lonely?"
Shu Ran's words made Yun Li pause for breath. After pondering what she meant by "encounters," she placed a finger on her lips and felt a smile creeping up at the corners of her mouth.
