In the deep autumn of Shanghai, the chill in the air grew stronger, and the leaves of the French parasol trees on the streets of the French Concession fell in a flurry, adding a touch of desolation to a city already shrouded in the shadows of war. Inside the Wang Wei Secret Service Agency building, however, the atmosphere was tense and suffocating, as if they were preparing for battle. A piece of intelligence burst like a bomb among the higher-ups, quickly spreading the news that there was an undercover agent within their ranks. 0

In an instant, the calm facade was shattered, and undercurrents surged. In the corridors, agents whispered to one another; their once arrogant demeanor had diminished, replaced by suspicion and fear. Each person looked at their colleagues as potential threats. In the offices, papers rustled as they were rifled through; drawers were yanked open and slammed shut, desks and chairs were left in disarray. Agents frantically searched for any clues that might point to the mole among them. 0

When Lin Feng learned of the investigation, he maintained an outward calm, methodically continuing with his translation tasks as if nothing were amiss. Yet inside, his heart raced uncontrollably; he gripped his pen tightly, his knuckles turning white. As an infiltrator within the Underground Party, he understood better than anyone how perilous their situation was. If exposed, not only would his life be in jeopardy, but countless comrades would also be endangered, and years of effort by their organization could be destroyed in an instant. 0

In everyday life, Lin Feng had built good relationships with some colleagues through his sincere and friendly demeanor. Whenever coworkers faced difficulties—whether it was translating technical terms or dealing with mundane troubles—he was always the first to lend a hand, patiently offering answers and assistance. Gradually, he earned their trust. During the initial stages of the investigation, many spoke up for him during questioning, temporarily keeping him off the list of suspects. 0

However, as the investigation intensified and became more rigorous, the situation took a sharp turn for the worse. The Japanese Army took direct command, mobilizing various forces to form a specialized review team that implemented detailed and strict scrutiny measures. They not only delved deeply into agents' backgrounds and daily activities but also instituted random surprise inspections and placed informants throughout the agency to monitor everyone’s every move. 0

One day, Lin Feng walked into the office as usual but quickly sensed something was off. The normally bustling office was eerily quiet; colleagues kept their heads down, pretending to be busy while stealing glances at him from the corners of their eyes. His heart sank as he realized something was wrong; nevertheless, he maintained his composure and walked toward his workstation. Before he could sit down, a Japanese officer entered with two armed soldiers and announced loudly: "Everyone stay put! Prepare for inspection!" 0

The soldiers swiftly spread out, roughly searching every desk and drawer. Papers and books were carelessly tossed onto the floor; office supplies lay scattered everywhere. As Lin Feng watched his carefully disguised workspace about to be searched, cold sweat broke out on his palms. He forced himself to stay calm while rapidly brainstorming countermeasures. 0

Just as a soldier was about to uncover his hidden compartment containing vital intelligence, Lin Feng suddenly remembered that he had put a pack of high-end cigarettes in his pocket that he had bought from a street vendor that morning. He quickly pulled out the cigarettes and approached the Japanese officer with a broad smile: "Taijun, you've worked hard! This is a special gift I arranged for you from out of town; please give it a try." The officer glanced at the cigarettes with a hint of greed in his eyes before reaching out to take them: "Yoshi! You’re quite considerate." 0

Taking advantage of the officer's distraction with the cigarettes, Lin Feng discreetly kicked over a wastebasket beside his desk. The garbage spilled out all over the floor, conveniently covering up where his hidden compartment was located. 0

After searching thoroughly without finding anything suspicious, the soldiers left in disappointment. Lin Feng let out a quiet sigh of relief but knew this was only a temporary reprieve; greater dangers loomed ahead. 0

In the days that followed, every move Lin Feng made was under close surveillance. When he ate in the cafeteria, there were always watchful eyes behind him; when he chatted with colleagues in the corridors for just a few minutes, someone would soon come asking about their conversation. Going out on missions became increasingly difficult; each operation had designated personnel following closely behind him, leaving him almost no opportunity to contact his organization or relay information. 0

During one operation alongside a Japanese officer hunting down anti-Japanese elements, Lin Feng spotted an alley that might lead to an organizational contact point. His heart raced at this possibility; just as he thought about finding an excuse to investigate further, one of his watchers immediately called out: "Stop! Where are you going?" Lin Feng quickly feigned nonchalance: "Taijun! I thought I saw something moving over here and wanted to take a look." The watcher scrutinized him suspiciously before snorting: "Don’t try any tricks—stay honest!" 0

That night back at his residence, Lin Feng lay on his bed staring at the dark ceiling for what felt like ages without being able to sleep. He knew that as investigations continued to deepen, time was running out for him. He needed to devise a plan quickly—one that would allow him to remain undercover while also transmitting crucial information about Japanese officers collaborating with Wang Wei to encircle their Base of Resistance. 0

As he tossed and turned in bed, a bold plan began to take shape in his mind. He decided to exploit the internal conflicts between two factions within Wang Wei Intelligence Agency—traitors vying for power—to create chaos that would divert enemy attention and provide him with an opportunity to break free amidst the turmoil. 0
