Captain hesitated for a moment, but ultimately dared not disobey the order from the Military Inspector. He waved his hand to signal the team to change direction and head down the left path. Lin Feng watched the departing team and secretly breathed a sigh of relief. He knew this was just the first step; many challenges lay ahead.
The jeep continued on, and Lin Feng kept a close eye on his surroundings, searching for the next opportunity. Before long, they arrived at a small town. The atmosphere was tense, with Kuomintang soldiers patrolling the streets and strictly questioning passersby.
Lin Feng realized that this was an important transfer station for the Underground Party Transportation Line. If the Kuomintang Army discovered any clues, the consequences would be dire. He quickly devised a plan.
He instructed the driver to stop in the town square and strode into the Town Hall. Inside, several Kuomintang officers were discussing something. Upon seeing Lin Feng enter, they all stood up. Without any pleasantries, Lin Feng revealed his identity as an inspector and said loudly, "I have received intelligence that Communist elements have a secret contact point in this town, right nearby. What are you all doing? You haven't discovered a single clue!"
The officers exchanged glances, and one of them hurriedly explained, "Sir, we have conducted a thorough search throughout the town but have not found anything suspicious yet."
"Hmph! Your search is simply perfunctory!" Lin Feng interrupted him. "It seems you don't want to do your job. Just wait for the Communists to transport their supplies out and then go report to your superiors!"
The officers turned pale with fear and pleaded, "Sir, please calm down! We will intensify our search immediately. Please give us your instructions!"
Lin Feng pretended to think for a moment before saying, "As far as I know, Communists like to hide their contact points in inconspicuous places, such as dilapidated warehouses or abandoned houses. Gather all your personnel and focus on searching these locations. If you still can't find anything, I will hold you responsible!"
The officers took their orders and quickly mobilized soldiers to launch a large-scale search operation throughout the town. Unbeknownst to them, Lin Feng had deliberately led them in the wrong direction. In reality, the secret contact point for the Underground Party Transportation Line was in the basement of the Town Hall—seemingly ordinary but actually hiding a secret passage leading out of town.
While the Kuomintang soldiers busily searched around town, Lin Feng quietly approached the basement entrance to meet with members of the Underground Party Journal stationed there. He briefed them briefly, instructing them to be ready to evacuate through the tunnel as soon as the Kuomintang Army sensed something was amiss.
After handling matters in the small town, Lin Feng continued along his route of containment. Along the way, he cleverly created various obstacles to mislead the encircling forces. Sometimes he intentionally left behind false Communist traces by the roadside to tire out the Kuomintang Army; other times he exploited internal conflicts within the American side by spreading false orders that caused misunderstandings among units and hindered their coordination, significantly slowing down their encirclement efforts.
In this way, Lin Feng single-handedly tore open a gap in the ironclad encirclement of the Kuomintang forces, buying precious time for the Underground Party Transportation Line. He understood that this contest against the stubborn factions of the Kuomintang had only just begun; many more difficulties awaited him ahead. As long as he held onto his beliefs and wielded his wisdom, nothing could stop him from protecting the American side and safeguarding the Revolutionary Flame.
