He crouched low, relying on his familiarity with the layout of the archive room to avoid the remaining cameras, and silently approached the safe. Taking a deep breath to steady his nerves, Lin Feng reached out and began to unlock the combination lock, following the steps he had rehearsed countless times before.
Closing his eyes, he relied on his keen sense of touch and understanding of the internal structure of the lock. He gently turned the dial, pressing his ear against the lock body to listen intently for every subtle mechanical sound. Time seemed to stand still in that moment; the world around him faded away, leaving only the rapid beating of his heart and the soft clicking of the dial.
Just before the surveillance was about to resume its normal function, Lin Feng caught that long-awaited click—the sound of the lock finally opening. He barely had time to feel joy before swiftly pulling out a meticulously crafted replica key from his pocket. Inserting it into the keyhole, he turned it gently. Carefully extracting it, he placed it beside a portable Copy Machine he had prepared earlier and quickly pressed the copy button. The machine emitted a faint buzzing sound that felt particularly jarring in the stillness of the night, causing Lin Feng's heart to race.
However, just as half of the document was being copied, an unexpected commotion erupted outside. The hurried footsteps echoed down the corridor—clearly, the Patrol Team had finished their shift early and was heading toward the archive room. Lin Feng's heart tightened; he knew that if discovered, not only would his life be at stake, but it could also jeopardize the entire Underground Party Organization. Yet he remained calm, quickly hitting the pause button on the Copy Machine and hiding both the document and its incomplete copy in his jacket. He then cleaned up as fast as he could, closing the safe and resetting its pressure-sensitive device before slipping behind a large filing cabinet.
The Patrol Team entered the archive room, their flashlight beams slicing through the darkness like swords. Lin Feng held his breath, curling up in the shadows with his eyes fixed on their movements. The Patrol Team found nothing amiss; after a brief inspection, they left.
Letting out a sigh of relief once their footsteps faded away completely, Lin Feng emerged from his hiding spot to finish copying the document. He carefully returned the original file to its place in the safe, ensuring it was exactly as he had found it. With the copied document in hand, he followed his planned route and left the archive room without drawing any attention.
That night, Lin Feng navigated through Shanghai's dimly lit streets with precious intelligence in hand, feeling both anxious and exhilarated. He knew he had just accomplished what seemed like an impossible mission, adding a glimmer of hope for victory to the American Side. Yet he also understood that danger was far from over; he would need to remain vigilant to ensure that this vital information reached his organization safely.
