Almost simultaneously, the door to the archive room was pushed open, and a beam of flashlight pierced through like a sword. The Duty Officer, holding the flashlight, appeared tense, his eyes scanning the room. The light swept across the file cabinets where Lin Feng was hiding inside, his heart pounding like thunder, afraid to even breathe. He fixed his gaze on the sliver of light that seeped through, terrified that any pause in its movement would reveal his hiding place. Time seemed to stand still at that moment; every second felt excruciatingly long, and Lin Feng felt as if his heartbeat would shatter his chest.
The Duty Officer paced slowly inside the room, the flashlight moving inch by inch as he scrutinized every corner and each row of file cabinets. When the beam landed on the cabinet where Lin Feng was concealed, he instinctively tightened his grip on the documents in his arms. Sweat beads rolled down his forehead, dripping onto the papers and dampening a small patch. Fortunately, the Duty Officer did not notice anything unusual; perhaps there were too many cabinets filled with clutter that obscured his view, or maybe Lin Feng was hidden too well to reveal any flaws. In any case, after a thorough search of the room, the Duty Officer left with lingering doubts.
Once the sound of footsteps faded completely down the corridor, Lin Feng finally let out a slow breath of relief. He gently pushed open the cabinet door and crawled out, his legs feeling weak from being tense for so long. He knew it was not yet time to relax; he had to quickly take the film and leave. Lin Feng swiftly adjusted his clothing to ensure that the documents and film were securely hidden before casually picking up an ordinary file and walking toward the archive room door.
In the corridor, guards continued their patrols, their footsteps echoing rhythmically. Lin Feng maintained a calm demeanor and nodded slightly at a guard as they passed each other, appearing just like an ordinary clerk heading home after a long day at work. Relying on his familiarity with the building's layout, he skillfully avoided several monitored areas and took winding paths until he finally reached the back door of the building.
At the back door stood a guard on duty. Lin Feng's heart tightened, and he hesitated for a moment. Quickly regaining composure, he forced a weary smile onto his face and said to the guard, "Brother, after a long day of work, I can finally head home. This job is really exhausting." As Lin Feng stepped out through the back door, he blended into Shanghai's dim night. He dared not linger for even a moment and followed a pre-planned route through narrow alleys. Along the way, he remained alert to any signs of being followed. Only when he confirmed it was safe did he stop in a hidden corner to securely stash away the film, preparing to find an opportunity to return this valuable intelligence to his organization.
At this moment, dawn began to break in the eastern sky; a new day was approaching. Lin Feng gazed at the lightening horizon with mixed emotions. He knew he had just undergone a thrilling life-and-death struggle; despite numerous dangers, he had successfully completed his mission. This intelligence carried the hopes of the American Side; he must ensure its safe delivery at all costs to add a glimmer of hope for victory in the Anti-Japanese War.
