Crashing into the Summer Night Sky 2: Deskmate

Yes, you heard it right. Our school has parallel classes, but sometimes seat adjustments are made across classes, especially for front and back desks or partners, under the pretense of "complementing each other's strengths." This time, Lu Xingyan, the Academic Genius from Class (1), was inexplicably "assigned" to the last row by the window in our Class (3), and the empty seat next to him happened to be the one I drew. 0

As I approached that seat with my backpack, under the complex gazes of my classmates (especially the girls), I felt like I was walking to the gallows. 0

Lu Xingyan was already sitting there. He rested his chin on one hand, gazing out the window, his profile so perfect it seemed like a character stepped out of a comic book. The sunlight filtered through the glass, casting a light golden halo around him, softening his cold demeanor but adding an air of distance. 0

He seemed oblivious to my arrival or simply indifferent to who would sit beside him. I carefully placed my backpack down and pulled out the chair, trying not to make a sound. Once seated, I could clearly feel the low pressure radiating from him. The air seemed to have solidified. 0

"Um... hello, I'm Xia Zhi." Out of politeness, I whispered a greeting, even though I knew he must remember me as the "troublemaker." 0

He didn't even lift his eyelids; he merely let out a faint "hm" from his nose as a response. 0

Well, I knew it would be like this. 0

In the days that followed, I felt like I was walking on thin ice. 0

Lu Xingyan was a classmate with a strong presence yet extremely quiet. He listened attentively during lessons and either worked on exercises or read books during breaks, or put on headphones to listen to something, hardly communicating with anyone. It was as if an invisible barrier surrounded him, repelling anyone who tried to get close. 0

I tried my best to minimize my presence; when drawing, I was careful not to let any paint smudge onto his side, and when reaching for something, I did so quietly to avoid disturbing his thoughts. The closest we ever got was when our elbows accidentally brushed against each other, and we both jumped back as if electrocuted. 0

Yet even so, I inadvertently noticed some of his "differences." 0

For instance, although he appeared indifferent, he never slacked off during cleaning duties; our group's area was always the cleanest. 0

One time my pen fell to the ground and rolled to his feet. I thought he would ignore it, but he silently bent down to pick it up and placed it on my desk without saying a word. 0

Another time, when a boy in front spoke loudly and disrupted my concentration in class, before I could remind him to be quiet, Lu Xingyan shot him a cold glance that immediately silenced him. 0

These subtle and often unnoticed actions began to shift my impression of him slightly. This "iceberg" didn’t seem so unapproachable after all? 0

Of course, most of the time we remained "the most familiar strangers," sharing a desk yet feeling as if there were a galaxy between us. 0

The days spent sitting next to Lu Xingyan passed in a strange calmness (or rather silence). I continued to lower my presence while he remained that moving iceberg. 0

Until that day in gym class. 0

It was basketball day during free activity time; most girls gathered together chatting while boys rushed eagerly toward the basketball court. Naturally, Lu Xingyan became one of the focal points among them. 0
