Since the "Band-Aid" incident on the basketball court, the atmosphere between me and Lu Xingyan seemed to have eased a bit. Although our communication was still minimal, at least he no longer completely ignored me. Occasionally, he would lend me a pen or casually offer a key insight when I got stuck on a physics problem.
However, this subtle change was noticed and exaggerated by someone with ulterior motives, turning into new trouble.
I don't know who it was, but someone posted on the school's anonymous forum with the title: "Shock! Academic Genius Lu Xingyan Suspected of 'Iron Tree Blossoming'? Frequent Interactions with a Girl from Class Three, Evidence: Band-Aid!" The post exaggeratedly described what happened that day on the basketball court and included a photo taken from an awkward angle—there I was, head down applying a Band-Aid to Lu Xingyan, while he looked down at me slightly, making the scene appear somewhat… intimate.
This stirred up a storm.
The comments section quickly filled with speculation.
"Is this for real? Isn't Lu Xingyan supposed to be immune to girls?"
"That girl from Class Three—"
"She must be the one chasing after him! Calculating girl!"
Various guesses, doubts, and even insults flooded in. As I walked down the hall, I could clearly feel the unfriendly gazes and whispers directed at me. I had always preferred to keep a low profile, but suddenly being thrust into the spotlight felt like being stripped bare and thrown into a public square—humiliating and unjust.
My good friend Lin Weiwei stood up for me: "Who do they think they are? This is too much! The angle of that photo is so deliberate! Zhi Zhi, just ignore them; they're just sour grapes."
I forced a smile and shook my head. "I know, it's just…" Just that it felt suffocating inside. More importantly, I didn't know how Lu Xingyan would react to this post. Would he think I caused trouble? Would he dislike me even more because of it?
In the following two days, Lu Xingyan seemed unaffected, maintaining his usual cold demeanor. But the calmer he appeared, the more anxious I felt.
Until Friday afternoon after school. As soon as I stepped out of the classroom, I was blocked by several girls. The leader among them was one of the candidates for "school beauty," named Sun Rui, who had openly expressed her affection for Lu Xingyan.
"Hey, Xia Zhi, right?" Sun Rui crossed her arms and looked me up and down with ill intent. "I heard you're quite capable; you even managed to get close to Lu Xingyan?"
Another girl chimed in: "Exactly! Just look at yourself; it's like a toad wanting to eat swan meat!"
Cornered against the wall, I felt both angry and anxious, my face burning red. "I didn't! We're just ordinary classmates!"
"Ordinary classmates?" Sun Rui scoffed. "Ordinary classmates don't give Band-Aids alone or let him make exceptions to get close! Stop pretending!"
Just when I was at a loss and about to cry, an icy voice unexpectedly cut in.
"What are you doing?"
It was Lu Xingyan. He had appeared behind me without my noticing, carrying his shoulder bag with a terrifyingly dark expression and eyes sharp as knives as he scanned the group of girls.
Sun Rui and her friends clearly hadn't expected Lu Xingyan to show up; their bravado immediately diminished. Sun Rui attempted to force a smile: "Xing Yan, we were just joking around with Xia Zhi..."
"Joke?" Lu Xingyan's gaze fell on Sun Rui's face, his tone icy enough to freeze. "My deskmate, is she someone you can just 'joke' about?"
He emphasized the words "deskmate," instilling a sense of undeniable possession.
He stepped forward, naturally positioning himself in front of me. This action made my heart skip a beat.
"Was it you who posted on the forum?" he asked, his voice low but carrying an undeniable weight of pressure.
Sun Rui's face turned pale, and his eyes darted away. "N-No, it wasn't us..."
