I was momentarily taken aback, nodding slightly before shaking my head. "A bit... but it's fine."
He turned to look at me, his gaze deep and penetrating. "Don't worry about what others think. Their mouths are theirs to use."
"I know..." I lowered my head, my fingers tracing the rust on the railing. "It's just... a little unfamiliar."
"You'll get used to it," he said.
I looked up at him, somewhat puzzled. What did he mean by that? Getting used to being talked about?
He seemed to sense my confusion, shifting his gaze back to the distance, his voice soft. "Exceptional people are always more likely to be noticed and discussed. You just need to be yourself."
I was taken aback. Was he... comforting me? And was he referring to himself, or... did that include me as well? How could I possibly be considered exceptional?
My heart began to race irregularly again.
Just then, I accidentally grazed my finger against the rusty railing, a sharp sting shooting through me.
"Ouch..." I instinctively pulled my hand back, noticing a small bead of blood forming at my fingertip.
Before I could react, Lu Xingyan had already stepped in front of me, his brow furrowed. "How can you be so careless?"
There was a hint of reproach in his tone, but more than that... concern?
Then he did something unexpected. He pulled out a... Band-Aid from his school uniform pocket.
It was one of those silly cartoon designs—this time featuring a little rabbit.
I stared at him in surprise. Why would a boy carry something like this? Was it because I had put one on him last time?
He seemed to realize how awkward it was, a faint blush creeping up his ears, but he quickly tore open the packaging and took my hand.
"Don't move."
His fingertips were cool against my skin, sending a slight shiver through me as he carefully placed the Rabbit Band-Aid over my wound, his touch gentle and unlike his usual demeanor.
In that moment, it felt as if the wind on the rooftop had stopped. I could clearly hear the drum-like beating of my heart and his breath so close to me.
"All done." He released my hand and stepped back, reverting to his usual aloof expression as if the tender person from moments ago wasn't him at all.
I looked at the smiling little rabbit on my finger and then up at his slightly awkward profile. In some corner of my heart, something was quietly melting and... taking root.
So, even an iceberg could have such a thoughtful and gentle side. He truly didn't seem indifferent after all.
This secret shared on the rooftop, along with the Little Bunny Band-Aid, became a small secret known only to him and me, adding something to my gaze whenever I looked at him—something I hadn't even realized was there.
The first Monthly Exam arrived as scheduled, casting a tense atmosphere over the entire Sophomore Year. For me, the pressure was even greater because my desk mate was the perennial top student, Lu Xingyan. Sitting next to an Academic Genius made me feel like my intelligence was being mercilessly crushed.
That weekend before the exam, I unusually chose not to go out and instead buried myself in the library with my books. Physics had always been a tough subject for me, and staring at those complex formulas and laws made my head spin.
Just when I was scratching my head over a Mechanics problem, completely stumped, a Draft Paper was suddenly slid over to me.
I looked up in confusion and saw that Lu Xingyan had somehow taken the empty seat next to me. He didn’t glance at me; his eyes were fixed on my Physics Workbook as his fingers quickly wrote something on the Draft Paper.
“Here,” he said, tapping the tip of his pen on the problem, “the force analysis is wrong. It should be like this…”
