Upon seeing the message from Old Liu, I immediately rushed outside. Zhou Jing grabbed my arm and said, "Wait! You need to see this first."
She opened her computer and pulled up a document. "This was found in the original materials of the Sun Society. Look at these symbols."
On the screen was a hand-drawn chart densely filled with various strange symbols. These symbols matched those on the stone tablet at the village entrance and those seen on the altar.
"These are not ordinary symbols," Zhou Jing explained. "They are an ancient code. My father studied them throughout his life."
"Have you cracked it?" I asked eagerly.
"Not completely," she replied, pointing to several of them. "These are Direction symbols used to mark the locations of altars and escape routes." Then she pointed to the most complex symbol, "And this one represents the dwelling of the gods."
I stared at that symbol, suddenly recalling the diary I had seen in the bunker: Did the Japanese headquarters also go by this name?
"Yes, and it's not just the name," Jiang Zhendong interjected. "Before your father went missing, he discovered an astonishing connection."
He opened a satellite map. "Look at this." The map marked several points connected by lines.
"This is where the Sun Society has its bases," he said. "If you connect these points, they match their symbols perfectly."
I gasped in shock. "So Changling Village is just one of their bases?"
"Yes," Zhou Jing confirmed, "but it's special. According to reliable intelligence, their highest leader will come for a ceremony tonight."
"So they want to move my father?" I asked anxiously.
"No," Zhou Jing's voice lowered. "They plan to execute everyone who knows their secrets tonight. It's their rule to eliminate all potential threats before a ceremony."
My phone vibrated again. It was a photo from Old Liu: several masked individuals were carrying a stretcher covered with a white cloth, looking like...
Time was running out. I grabbed my coat. "I have to go save them!"
"Wait!" Zhou Jing quickly typed something on her computer. "The symbols hide another message. Look at this gap." She pointed to a break in the symbol representing the dwelling of the gods. "According to my father's research, there's a secret passage here that leads directly to the altar."
"Where is it?" I asked urgently.
"Right beneath Fangya Cliff," she said, pulling up a topographic map. "Look at this location; when the Japanese built it, they specifically dug an emergency passageway. If we act now, this is our best breakthrough point."
Just then, Jiang Zhendong's phone rang. After answering, his face turned pale. "No! I've just received news that a batch of disguised boxes has been discovered deep in the mountains," he said, glancing at me with alarm. "They're filled with children!"
"How many?" I asked, dread creeping in.
"At least thirty—all of them missing children," he replied grimly. "They've been injected with some kind of drug and are in a state of unconsciousness."
My fists clenched tightly. They were preparing for a large-scale sacrifice. Zhou Jing said that tonight was the night of the ritual, and they intended to offer a significant number of children under the full moon to summon the so-called deities.
Suddenly, I noticed a special mark at the center of the symbol: what was that?
Zhou Jing leaned in closer to take a look. "According to my father's notes, this represents divine blood. They believe that by injecting the blood of the sacrifices into specific bronze vessels, they can—"
"Bronze vessels?" I recalled something. "Are you talking about those masks?"
"Yes, those masks are specially made with grooves on the inside to hold—" She didn't finish her sentence, but I understood.
I pulled out the mask I had taken from the bunker and found intricate grooves on the inside, resembling some sort of conduits.
"Tonight," Zhou Jing said, "they will wear all the masks. It is said to be part of an evil ritual that grants them eternal life."
My phone buzzed for the third time. It was Old Liu again: "They've gone to the secret entrance. Hurry, it's that gap you mentioned earlier!"
I turned and dashed out.
"Li Hao!" Zhou Jing called out, stopping me as she handed me a folder. "This contains all the information my father left behind." She paused for a moment. "If I don’t return tonight, you must make this public."
"What are you saying?"
"I’m going with you." Her gaze was unwavering. "My sister died at their hands. This time, I will end it myself."
In the distance, the sky began to turn red; sunset was approaching. And deep within Changling Village, countless innocent lives awaited rescue.
