The SWAT team began to clear the scene, while paramedics transported the unconscious children to the hospital. I sat in the corridor outside the altar, watching my father sort through the documents he had hidden away. 0

"Can you finally tell me the truth about what happened back then?" I asked. 0

My father was silent for a moment before pulling out a yellowed photograph from the pile of papers. "Do you remember this?" 0

The photo showed my six-year-old birthday party, with our family of three on a swing set in the backyard. At that time, my father had just been transferred to the Major Crimes Unit, and Xieqin was still working as a nurse at the hospital. 0

That summer, my father's voice was somewhat hoarse. The hospital had received a batch of blood samples of unknown origin. "You, Xieqin, discovered that all these blood samples came from minors and all had rare blood types." 0

Xieqin took over, "I told your father about this, and he began a secret investigation." 0

It turned out that these blood samples were from missing children. My father said that following this lead, we uncovered a vast underground network. They posed as a charity organization, specifically seeking children with certain blood types. 0

"And then?" I prompted. 0

"Then we tracked down Yama Ichiro." My father pulled out a newspaper clipping from his folder. "This man appears to be a medical expert but is actually a war criminal." Xieqin added, "He participated in human experiments during the war and escaped to China after it ended, changing his name and continuing his mad research." 0

My father pointed to the date on the clipping: "We finally had solid evidence. But on the night we were ready to close in, you both disappeared." 0

"Yes," Xieqin sighed. "They had already discovered our investigation. That night, Yama Ichiro personally came to see your father under the pretense of wanting to talk. After that, we were locked in the basement." My father's expression darkened. "There, we witnessed their true madness." 0

He pulled out a stack of handwritten notes from the bottom of the folder. "These are my records from when I was imprisoned. Yama Ichiro told us that their experiments actually began during World War II. They believed that certain people's blood contained divine power and that by extracting it through special methods, they could achieve immortality." 0

"So they..." 0

"They have been searching for individuals with rare blood types," Xieqin explained. "Those bronze masks were their extraction devices. But in reality, it wasn't about immortality; it was an extremely painful method of prolonging life." 0

"They had to continuously inject fresh blood," my father said, "or else they would age rapidly and die. That's why they needed a constant supply of new victims." 0

He turned to the last page of his notes: "But what shocked us most was that they had established such bases around the world. Changling Village was just one of them." 0

"Then why didn't they kill you?" I asked. 0

"Because..." Xieqin glanced at my father, "because they realized you might also carry that rare blood type. They wanted to use us as leverage against you when you grew up." 0

I gasped in disbelief. "So for sixteen years..." 0

"They have been waiting for you," my father said. "Professor Yam believes that the blood carried by the second generation will be even purer." 0

As he spoke, Jiang Zhendong approached: "The test results are out. Zhang Shouren is indeed the son of Yama Ichiro, and he handed me a document. We found this in his office." 0

It was a densely packed list, recording contact points and responsible individuals from around the globe. Next to each name was a date, the earliest tracing back several years. 0

"This is not the end," my father said; "it is just the beginning. There are more outposts, more victims waiting for us to rescue." 0

I looked at the unfamiliar place names on the list and suddenly understood my father's meaning. This organization was like a massive venomous snake, coiling around the world, devouring innocent lives. The tragedy in Changling Village was merely a glimpse of its dark veil. 0

Moonlight streamed through the corridor windows, illuminating the list. In the distance, the sirens of an ambulance gradually faded away, carrying the rescued children from this nightmarish place. 0

But I knew that the real battle was just beginning. 0
