On the mountain road, the taillights of several vans flickered in the night. My motorcycle was nearly out of gas, and I dared not stop. In my ear, I could hear Zhou Jing's hurried breathing; she was still in the hospital, in a similarly dangerous situation.
"They've found out!" she whispered. "Yamada is interrogating everyone."
"Hold on," I replied. "Reinforcements are on the way. What's your situation?"
"I'm hiding in the ventilation duct of the lab." Her voice suddenly turned frantic. "Oh my God!"
"What’s wrong?"
Through her miniature camera, I saw Yamada busy with a few people in the lab below. A row of bronze masks was neatly arranged on a table, looking more exquisite than those from Changling Village.
"This is the latest model," Yamada's voice came through. "Based on the lessons learned from Changling Village, we’ve improved the blood extraction device. There won't be any problems this time."
"Are all the samples ready?" someone asked.
"Of course." Yamada walked over to a freezer. "These have all been rigorously screened. The purest blood..."
Suddenly, he stopped as an alarm blared again.
"What’s going on?" he barked.
"Nothing! Someone ran in to report that suspicious individuals were caught on surveillance in the underground parking lot. It's the police!"
Yamada's expression twisted into a snarl. "Damn it! Transfer all data and initiate emergency protocols!"
"What about those kids?"
"Eliminate them all! Leave no survivors!"
My heart sank. Just as I was about to tell Zhou Jing to escape, a sharp turn appeared ahead on the mountain road. The convoy had to slow down, and I seized the opportunity to catch up.
Through the back window of the last van, I saw several children lying haphazardly inside, all unconscious. The driver wore a mask, and from the reflection in the rearview mirror, I recognized him as the head of security from the hospital.
At that moment, my motorcycle let out a wail and completely stalled.
"Damn it!" I kicked off the stand and propelled myself towards the van with momentum. In a split second, I grabbed onto the rear door handle!
The people inside clearly noticed something was wrong; the vehicle began to shake violently. My grip was slipping, but I knew I couldn't give up. The lives of those children depended on this moment.
Suddenly, the van slammed to a halt. I crashed against the cargo area and took advantage of it to yank open the door.
"Don't move!" I pulled out my gun.
The people inside were quicker than me. One of them spun around abruptly, an injection needle aimed straight at my neck. I barely dodged it but still felt a sharp sting as it grazed me.
"Do you really think this will stop the ritual?" he sneered. "How naive!"
A wave of dizziness washed over me; the injection definitely contained something. Just then, I heard Zhou Jing's voice in my earpiece: "Xu Hao! I found Yamada's notebook in the lab. They are planning to take the children—"
The communication suddenly cut off. At the same time, I noticed a flicker of fear in the security captain's eyes as a familiar figure appeared in his rearview mirror.
Honda Miho had somehow appeared by the roadside, holding a rifle.
"It's over, Watanabe-kun," she said in Japanese.
The security captain, now revealed to be Watanabe, turned pale. "You! Traitor!"
"I'm just atoning for my sins." She pulled the trigger.
Amidst the sound of shattering glass, I used my last bit of strength to lunge for the steering wheel. The van spun out of control, crashing into the guardrail.
Finally, I heard Jiang Zhendong's voice in my earpiece: "Reinforcements are on the way! Hold on!"
I was barely able to keep it together. The effects of the drug were intensifying, and my vision began to blur. The last thing I saw was Honda Miho crouching down to check on the children.
"I'm sorry," she murmured in Japanese. "I'm late."
Before my consciousness faded, I seemed to hear an explosion in the distance. It was from the hospital.
"Zhou Jing! She's still there!"
I wanted to shout something, but darkness consumed everything.
