In the midst of the swirling smoke, Koji Yamada's face appeared particularly ferocious. He had removed his suit jacket, revealing a white lab coat underneath, with a name tag that read "Chief Experiment Supervisor."
"Do you know why I chose this moment to capture you?" he said in a near-manic tone. "Tonight is the most special total lunar eclipse. A once-in-fifty-years opportunity!"
"What do you want?" I positioned myself in front of Zhou Jing and Makiko.
"What do I want?" He burst into laughter. "Of course, to fulfill our family's long-standing ambition. The military experiments have never truly ended; we have been searching for the perfect formula. And now—"
He raised a bronze mask in his hand. "This is the latest model, combining ancient alchemy with modern technology. Once activated during the lunar eclipse, it can instantly extract all the essence from the experimental subjects."
"You mean... drain their blood at once?" Zhou Jing exclaimed in terror.
"Not just blood," Yamada's eyes gleamed with madness. "It’s all the energy within them! You’ve already witnessed it; those experimental subjects possess unimaginable power. They are simply too weak to withstand it. But we are different."
He turned around, pointing at a massive device at the end of the corridor. "Do you see that? That is the Blood Purification System. For the past seventy years, we have been refining it. Now, it is finally perfect."
"So you've been searching for children with special blood types," I realized.
"Exactly!" he replied eagerly. "They are the best candidates—pure blood, strong life force, combined with unique genetics; it's a gift from heaven."
As he spoke, he pressed a button on the remote control in his hand. In an instant, all the chambers lit up with an eerie blue light. The modified blood began to boil and surged through the pipes toward the central device.
"You've gone mad!" Makiko struggled to stand up. "These are living children!"
"To gain something, one must pay a price," Yamada sneered. "Do you think the military chose children for experimentation for no reason? Only the purest lives can bear the strongest powers!"
Suddenly, alarms blared loudly. A researcher rushed in frantically. "Professor Yamada! The lunar eclipse has started early!"
"What?"
"There was a miscalculation; it starts in ten minutes!"
Yamada's expression changed dramatically. "Quick! Activate the emergency plan! Connect all experimental subjects to the system!"
A team of heavily armed guards burst in, forcibly dragging the awakening children toward the central device. But just then, the first boy to wake let out a piercing scream.
The sound waves echoed in the confined space, causing all glassware to tremble. Several guards collapsed, clutching their ears.
"Calm him down!" Yamada ordered.
But it was already too late. More experimental subjects began to awaken, their eyes glowing eerily in the darkness. An invisible force flowed through the air as all Yi-Rang Apparatus units started to go haywire.
"You monsters!" Yamada shouted as he drew his gun. "Die!"
In that critical moment, a familiar figure descended from above—Honda Miho! She had somehow found us and was armed with an assault rifle she had taken from one of the guards.
"It's over, Cousin," she said to Yamada. "Your sins must come to an end."
Yamada grinned wickedly. "End? No, this is just the beginning. Look outside."
We turned to gaze out the window. The dark clouds were parting, revealing a sliver of the moon. Yet at its edge, it had already begun to turn a deep crimson.
