The edge of the moon was gradually swallowed by darkness, and a blood-red glow spilled in through the basement's ventilation shaft. All the experimental pods began to hum, and the modified blood inside started to churn violently.
"Look!" Zhou Jing pointed at the central device. The once calm liquid suddenly boiled, revealing an eerie fluorescent hue. The newly awakened test subjects also exhibited the same glow in their eyes.
"It's finally beginning!" Yamada laughed maniacally, the culmination of generations of effort was about to bear fruit!
He pressed another button on the remote control. Instantly, all the bronze masks lit up, and the conduits on the walls began to vibrate violently.
"Be careful!" Miho shouted. "He's about to activate the extraction system!"
It was too late. Dozens of glowing tubes coiled around the children like snakes. The first boy to awaken tried to resist, but an invisible force sent the nearest conduit flying. More tubes surged forward, ultimately ensnaring him.
"No!" Makiko struggled to help but was shot in the leg by Yamada.
"Don't waste your effort," he said while attaching conduits to the mask. "This system is specifically designed for them. The stronger the test subject, the more they will be drawn in."
Before he could finish speaking, the boy let out a piercing scream. Blinding blue light surged through the conduits towards the central device, and his face turned pale at a visible rate.
The other children also groaned in pain. Their life force was being forcibly extracted and injected into a massive storage tank.
"You monster!" Zhou Jing charged at Yamada.
Yamada contemptuously raised his gun just as a loud crash echoed from above. The metal cover of the ventilation shaft was blown off by some unseen force, allowing more moonlight to flood in.
"What’s happening?" Yamada frowned.
"I noticed that the boy's expression changed." In the moonlight, he radiated an eerie glow, and the conduits on his body began to vibrate violently.
"It’s impossible!" Yamada stared in terror at the instruments. "The energy levels are reversing! Shut down the system!"
It was too late. With a deafening explosion, all the conduits burst open. The extracted blood surged into the air like a living entity, forming a massive vortex under the moonlight.
"This isn’t the reaction we anticipated!" Yamada frantically pressed switches. "Damn it! Why is this happening?"
"Because you forgot one thing," Miho said. "The failures of previous experiments weren't due to insufficient technology; they underestimated that power. Some things are beyond human control."
The vortex grew larger, and the blood-red liquid began to resonate with some force. An oppressive feeling filled the air, making it hard to breathe, while all instruments screamed uncontrollably.
"Stop! Stop it now!" Yamada shouted desperately as he fired at the boy.
The moment the bullet approached him, it was deflected by some kind of force field. The boy slowly turned his head, his hollow gaze flashing with anger.
In the next second, an invisible shockwave swept through the entire basement. Yamada was thrown back violently against a wall. He tried to grab onto something; everything shook around him, including the pods filled with test subjects.
"Run!" Miho pulled us toward the exit. "The whole basement is going to collapse!"
We stumbled toward the exit, the sound of shattering glass echoing behind us. Looking back, I saw that all the chambers had cracked open, and the experimental subjects floated in midair, emanating an eerie glow.
Yamada got up and put on that specially made mask. "This power is mine! All mine!" he shouted.
He lunged madly toward the whirlpool of blood, trying to grasp something. The liquid seemed alive, instantly enveloping him.
In my last glance, I saw Yamada's mask shining with a dazzling red light under the moonlight before he was completely consumed by the blood-red vortex. The experimental subjects continued to float in the air, bathed in the light of the blood moon, as if participating in some ancient ritual.
"Finally, they have taken their revenge," Miho murmured.
The total eclipse continued, and something even more terrifying was about to happen. Just then, we heard more explosions coming from other areas of the research facility.
