The entire underground research facility shook, alarms blaring in every corner. Under Miho's lead, we navigated through the swaying corridor, followed closely by the newly freed test subjects. They floated like ghosts, emanating an eerie blue glow.
Suddenly, a series of violent explosions echoed from a distance. The other experimental areas were in chaos! Makiko stumbled, leaning against the wall, exclaiming that they had all awakened!
Through the glass windows of the corridor, we witnessed a shocking scene: a blue beam of light shot skyward, piercing through layer after layer of concrete ceiling. The light of the blood moon poured down through the breach, illuminating the entire underground space.
"Oh God," Zhou Jing murmured, "how many children are there?"
At that moment, Yamada's voice suddenly crackled over the intercom, but it had completely changed pitch, sounding as if multiple people were speaking at once: "Foolish humans, do you think this is how it ends?"
A massive blood-red vortex formed at the end of the corridor. At its center stood Yamada, now fully mutated. The bronze mask had fused with his flesh, his skin glimmering with a metallic sheen. Countless blood vessel-like conduits extended from his body, writhing in the air like tentacles.
"Do you see?" He spread his arms wide, his voice filled with fervor. "This is true evolution! Not mere immortality, but an existence that transcends humanity!"
He had gone mad. Miho raised her gun; we had to stop him!
But as the bullet neared Yamada, it was halted by a barrier of blood. He laughed heartily: "Such toys are useless against me now. Let me reveal to you the true secret of our forces."
His body began to twist as more blood surged from all directions, weaving a gigantic net in the air. "We are not researching immortality; we are seeking a way to summon ancient gods! Those special blood samples and those cruel experiments were all for this moment!"
Ancient gods? I stared in shock at this creature before me, no longer recognizable as human.
"Exactly!" His voice grew increasingly inhuman. "During wartime, we discovered some records in ancient tombs in China. Some people's blood holds ancient power; if extracted at specific times and through special methods..."
The crimson net began to constrict, aiming to capture the floating test subjects. But the first boy to awaken suddenly floated forward, arms outstretched. The other test subjects followed suit, forming a glowing ring.
"Interesting," Yamada's laughter echoed down the corridor. "Let me see whose power is stronger!"
A confrontation beyond human comprehension began. Scarlet blood clashed with ethereal blue energy in midair, distorting the entire space due to immense energy fluctuations. Metal panels on the walls were torn apart, and cracks began to form on the ground.
"Quick!" Miho pointed to an emergency exit. "We have to get out of here!"
But the boy turned his head and rasped, "We can't leave yet. Everything here must be destroyed."
His gaze fell upon the disk in my hand. It contained all the experimental records, including how to extract that mysterious power.
