"He is right," Makiko said, "we must destroy this place. All the data, all the devices, not a single one can be left behind. Otherwise, such a tragedy will repeat itself."
At that moment, Yamada let out a thunderous roar. More blood erupted from his body, forming countless sharp spears that lunged toward us.
The boy waved his hand, and a blue energy barrier blocked the attack. But Yamada's power was too strong; the barrier began to crack.
"You can't escape!" he bellowed. "This power will ultimately belong to me! To the Yamamoto Family!"
"No," the boy said quietly, "it has to end."
All the test subjects raised their hands simultaneously. Their energy fields began to vibrate, producing a strange wave. I felt a powerful suction as the blood controlled by Yamada surged uncontrollably toward them.
"No! What are you doing?" For the first time, fear crept into Yamada's voice. "Stop!"
But it was too late. The brilliance of the test subjects grew stronger, even overpowering the moonlight. The boy turned to us and spoke his final words:
"Run."
The blinding blue light engulfed everything. I felt myself being pushed away by some unseen force, and all that remained before my eyes was a blank void. In my last moments of consciousness, I thought I heard Yamada let out one final scream, along with the relieved sighs of those children.
When we awoke in the clearing outside our research facility, the lunar eclipse had ended. The entire underground facility had collapsed, leaving behind a massive pit. Moonlight illuminated the ruins, casting reflections of shattered bronze masks across the ground.
"It’s over," Honda Miho said as she gazed at the large pit. "It’s finally over."
But just then, the ground trembled violently. A crimson mist rose from the ruins, coalescing into a vague human shape.
"It’s not over," came Yamada's voice, but it quickly dissipated into the wind.
We exchanged glances. Was this nightmare truly over? The test subjects had sacrificed themselves to destroy this evil research facility. Yet Yamada's last words lingered like a curse in everyone's hearts.
"Well," Zhou Jing said, "we still have work to do."
Yes, there were other locations waiting for us to investigate. And who knew if the Yamamoto Family had any other survivors? Were they still somewhere in the world continuing this mad plan?
As I looked at the rising sun, I clenched my fists tightly. This was not an end; it was just the beginning.
