In the blizzard, the enormous monster made of blood and human flesh lunged at us. Ivanov was the first to react, pulling us into a roadside ditch. The giant claws swept just above our heads, leaving deep grooves in the snow.
"Scatter!" Honda Miho shouted, pulling the trigger.
The specially crafted bullet struck the monster's body, erupting in a burst of blue flames. It let out a piercing shriek as the blood on its surface began to boil and twist. But soon, those wounds healed.
"It's useless," Ivanov said. "This thing is stronger than what we faced at Mount Fuji."
"Because this is a gateway," Honda Miho said while retreating. "They are attempting a more terrifying plan to merge all experimental subjects' powers into one!"
In the snow, each step of the monster left burning marks. A symbol on its chest emitted a blinding red light, distorting the air around it due to the heat. The masks that formed its body glimmered under the moonlight, reflecting a metallic sheen.
Suddenly, Zhou Jing pointed at the mountaintop. "Look!"
Through the swirling snow, we saw the red light growing brighter at the summit. A group of figures in black was busy on some platform, with dozens of glass chambers in front of them, where humanoid shapes could be faintly seen.
"Live specimens," Ivanov gritted his teeth. "They are continuing their experiments!"
"No," Honda Miho's voice trembled. "It's not an experiment; it's a sacrifice! They want to use these people's blood to open that door!"
The monster seemed to understand her words and let out an earth-shattering roar. Its body suddenly swelled as countless blood-red tentacles extended from within, reaching out towards us.
"Be careful!"
I pulled Zhou Jing aside to dodge the attack, but one tentacle wrapped around my leg. The sensation sent chills through me; it wasn't ordinary blood but something alive, trying to seep through my skin.
"Let him go!" Zhou Jing shouted as she raised her gun.
The bullet struck the tentacle, exploding in a burst of blue flames. The monster recoiled in pain and released me, but it immediately opened its massive maw and spewed forth a dark red mist.
"Don't inhale it!" Honda Miho yelled. "That's contaminated blood!"
But several droplets of mist had already landed on my arm. In an instant, a searing pain shot through me as if something was burning inside my veins. I felt a strange power flowing within me, and my consciousness began to blur.
In my daze, I heard countless whispers and saw unfamiliar images—laboratories, operating tables, syringes, and figures wearing bronze masks. They were performing some ancient ritual, trying to summon an existence long forgotten by humanity.
"Wake up!" Zhou Jing's voice pulled me back to reality.
I jolted awake to find myself lying in the snow. Honda Miho was injecting me with some kind of drug while Ivanov covered us with a machine gun.
"The whispers... those images..." I struggled to speak.
"They're memories," Honda Miho said. "From those who were sacrificed. They have all become part of that monster now."
"No, not just memories," I rubbed my temples. "I saw..."
Suddenly, the monster let out a mournful howl. Its body began to twist violently as the masks that formed its body fell away one by one. In the moonlight, we finally saw its true form.
It was a gigantic face, yet it was not entirely human. Its features were twisted and deformed, with ancient malevolent fire burning in its eyes. On its forehead, an ancient inscription was prominently carved.
Honda Miho gasped in shock. The troops had discovered the symbol in Manchuria, Ivanov said, recording an ancient prophecy.
"What prophecy?"
At that moment, a strange chanting echoed from the mountaintop. The figures in black raised their bronze masks and began some sort of ritual. The monster's body suddenly ignited with blood-red flames, illuminating the entire expanse of snow.
In that eerie light, I saw the inscription on its forehead begin to shift, forming a terrifying message:
"When the blood moon rises, the gates of the gods will open, and the ancient shadows shall return to the mortal realm."
As the words faded, the entire mountain trembled violently. A crimson light shot up into the sky, tearing a massive rift in the pitch-black night.
