The alien artifact presented a mask that was unlike any I had seen before. It was a translucent bronze, with surface runes that seemed to flow like living creatures. From certain angles, I could even glimpse the double helix structure contained within.
This was a guiding mask, and Kong Yang had appeared behind me at some point; only those with a special bloodline could use it.
“How do you know?” I stared at him.
He gave a bitter smile and removed his own mask. In the moonlight, I finally saw his true face—a visage that straddled the line between human and alien.
“You are the most successful experiment of the unit,” he said. “You were bred from your father's blood and alien genes, a hybrid. But they didn’t anticipate that this would grant me the memories of both races.”
“So you’ve been helping us all along?”
“Yes, I know your father’s true purpose. He discovered an astonishing fact: our ancestors were actually descendants of these beings. However, over time, the genes gradually degenerated, losing the ability to communicate with them.”
Suddenly, a loud crash interrupted our conversation. Although Nakamura Monster had collapsed, the power of the bronze box continued to surge. Countless blood-red tendrils erupted from its body, frantically attacking everything around.
“We must hurry,” Kong Yang urged. “If the energy field goes completely out of control, both races will be destroyed.”
I put on the special mask. Instantly, a torrent of information flooded into my mind: I witnessed the rise and fall of ancient civilizations, understood why they had entered slumber, and saw the plans they had left behind.
Now I finally understood my father’s intention; this was not a reversal device but a balance mechanism.
“Exactly,” Kong Yang confirmed. “It can adjust the frequency of both races’ lives, allowing us to coexist. But activating it requires a special procedure.”
“Here!” Zhou Jing pointed to the top of the pyramid. “Look at how those runes are arranged!”
Through the mask, we saw that the entire pyramid was actually a massive programming device. The flowing runes formed intricate computational circuits, and the balance mechanism at the top served as the control center.
“In accordance with the five elements,” Zhou Jing explained, “Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water—each attribute must be infused with its corresponding energy.”
I nodded and began to follow the procedures in my memory. The alien entities also sprang into action; they positioned themselves at the five directions of the pyramid, coordinating with the energy flow.
But just then, Nakamura launched one final desperate counterattack: “Do you think this is over? Look at this!”
He raised the bronze box, and we were horrified to discover that it contained an even older entity—a being composed purely of energy!
“This is the true god!” Nakamura cackled. “Now, submit to its power!”
As the box opened, an indescribable torrent of energy swept through the underground space. All runes began to twist, and even the alien entities let out agonized shrieks.
“No!” Through the mask, I saw the truth: that wasn’t a god; it was a virus! An ancient civilization's virus! It was what had forced them into slumber.
“We must activate the balance mechanism immediately!” Kong Yang shouted. “Otherwise, all lives will be infected!”
I bit my finger, letting the blood drip onto the balance center. Everyone present with a special bloodline—Zhou Jing, Kong Yang, and even those otherworldly beings—did the same.
As different bloods merged together, a miracle unfolded: chains began to reorganize, forming an entirely new structure. This structure contained both human traits and alien characteristics, and more importantly, it held immunity against that virus!
Now! I shouted, activating the balancing procedure!
As the last rune illuminated, the entire pyramid erupted in dazzling light. The energy field began to restructure, and all frequencies adjusted toward a new equilibrium.
Within that radiance, I seemed to see my father's figure. He stood at the center of the light column, a look of contentment on his face.
This is true evolution, he whispered.
Everything was engulfed in brilliance.
