In the depths of winter, Changling Village lay blanketed in snow, with only the flickering lights of the archaeological team's camp piercing through the darkness. It had been three months since the discovery of the underground city, yet new findings continued to emerge daily.
"Are you sure you want to go down there?" Zhou Jing asked as I organized my gear, concerned about the unstable radiation levels in the basement.
"I have to," I replied, securing the fragments of a bronze mask. The symbols on that wall resembled those I had seen in my father's diary.
Three days prior, the archaeological team had uncovered a hidden basement while clearing the ruins. Unlike other facilities, this structure exhibited a distinctly superior architectural style, likely constructed by a later military force. However, what drew our attention were the strange symbols on the walls and a prominent line of text: "Second Sequence Activation Countdown."
"Be careful," Jiang Zhendong warned as he handed me a detection device. "This is the latest energy fluctuation detector. If anything seems off, evacuate immediately."
I nodded and donned my protective suit. Li Yang was also preparing to join me, but just then, the detector emitted a piercing alarm.
"Energy fluctuations!" Honda Miho exclaimed, staring at the device.
Before she could finish her sentence, a violent tremor shook the ground. Instantly, all instruments at the camp began to malfunction, even the lighting flickered violently.
"Something's wrong!" Li Yang's face turned pale. "The frequency of this wave—"
Through my mask, I noticed an eerie glow emanating from the direction of the basement. The symbols had inexplicably become unnaturally bright, as if activated by some unseen force.
"Look at the surveillance!" Jiang Zhendong pointed at the screen.
The monitor displayed that the walls of the basement were undergoing some kind of transformation. The symbols appeared to flow like living creatures, rearranging themselves until they formed a chilling image: an anatomical diagram of a human body.
"I need to get closer to the screen—wait! Look at these annotations!" I said.
Every part of the anatomical diagram was densely covered with notes. This wasn't ordinary medical documentation; it was some sort of modification plan. Through the special perspective of my mask, I realized these modifications involved every organ in the human body, aimed at—
"They're trying to create a perfect vessel," Li Yang said, "to host that ancient virus."
"But why would they do that?" Zhou Jing asked. "Haven't we—"
Before he could finish his thought, the surveillance feed suddenly shook violently. When it stabilized again, we saw that the anatomical diagram had become three-dimensional and was stepping down from the wall!
"Oh my God!" Honda Miho gasped.
The figure made entirely of symbols slowly turned to face the camera. It lacked facial features but gave off an unsettling impression of watching us intently.
Suddenly, its skin split open. Countless tiny symbols poured out from the fissures and formed a line in mid-air:
"Second Sequence Test Complete; Official Activation. Sample Requirement: Two Thousand Units."
Immediately after that, the entire figure exploded into countless symbols that dissipated into thin air. Strangely enough, everything else on the surveillance feed seemed unaffected.
"This is bad!" Li Yang shouted suddenly. "Check your blood!"
It was then that we noticed a tiny pinhole had appeared on our arms, though we couldn't tell when it had happened. Through the mask, we could see faint symbols spreading along our veins.
"This is the Second Sequence," Li Yang said in a low voice. "They want to replicate the ancient virus's progression in living subjects. We have become the first batch of test subjects."
At that moment, a deep humming sound emanated from the direction of the basement. We saw a red light flickering in the darkness, resembling some kind of beacon.
In a distant place, there might be more such beacons being activated.
