I looked at the caller ID and saw it was Officer Li.
I quickly answered the phone and asked, "Officer Li, what's going on?"
Officer Li's tone sounded heavy.
He said, "Qin Feng has recanted her statement at the detention center."
I was taken aback and asked, "What?"
Officer Li repeated, "Qin Feng has recanted."
In disbelief, I asked, "She recanted?"
"How is that possible?"
Officer Li sighed helplessly and said, "I don't want to believe it either."
"But the fact is what it is."
I hurriedly pressed for more details. "So what did she say?"
Officer Li replied, "Qin Feng said Wu Jiajia didn't bully her."
I was stunned.
If Wu Jiajia didn't bully Qin Feng, then Qin Feng's motive for murder would no longer hold.
The case had lost its significance.
I hurriedly asked, "Did Qin Feng say why she wanted to kill Wu Jiajia?"
Officer Li replied, "No."
"She just insists that Wu Jiajia never bullied her."
I furrowed my brows.
It seemed that this case was far more complicated than I had imagined.
After a moment of contemplation, I said, "Officer Li, I want to see Qin Feng."
Officer Li responded, "Sure."
"I'll arrange it right away."
On the afternoon of May 12th, Officer Li and I went to the detention center again.
Qin Feng sat before us, her hands cuffed.
She kept her head down and remained silent.
Her mood was much lower than it had been in the morning.
I found myself affected by her demeanor, unsure of what to say.
For a moment, the three of us fell into silence.
It was Officer Li who broke the silence first.
He asked, "Qin Feng, are you really going to change your statement?"
Qin Feng looked up and nodded.
I couldn't help but ask, "Why?"
"The morning hearing went quite smoothly, didn't it?"
"Why the sudden change?"
During the morning hearing, several key points raised by Lawyer Liu had been confirmed.
In light of the overwhelming evidence, Qin Feng had no reason to change his statement.
I urged, "Qin Feng, if you change your statement, it means you were lying this morning."
"Do you know what the consequences of lying are?"
"Not only will you face a harsher sentence, but you'll also lose people's trust in you."
"I hope you can think this through carefully."
Qin Feng bit his lip and said firmly, "I did not lie."
Officer Li furrowed his brow and asked, "Do you have any new evidence or testimonies?"
Qin Feng nodded and replied, "Yes."
Officer Li quickly inquired, "What is it?"
Qin Feng clenched her fists, anger flashing in her eyes.
She said, "Wu Jiajia's reason for wanting to end her life is—"
"She has been sexually assaulted by Yao Qiang for a long time."
Upon hearing this information, both Officer Li and I were shocked.
We finally understood Wu Jiajia's pain and despair.
We also grasped what Qin Feng meant by "helping her."
Officer Li hurriedly pressed on, "When did you find out?"
Qin Feng bit her lip and said, "It was a month ago."
A month ago, Wu Jiajia confided in Qin Feng about her experiences.
She told Qin Feng that since the last semester began, their homeroom teacher, Yao Qiang, had been making inappropriate physical contact with her.
At first, it was just a pat on the head or a gentle touch on the back, but it gradually escalated to hugs and kisses.
After the final exams of the last semester, Yao Qiang called Wu Jiajia into his office and forced himself on her.
Since then, Yao Qiang frequently subjected Wu Jiajia to sexual assault.
Wu Jiajia felt immense pain and despair.
She contemplated suicide multiple times but was afraid of the consequences it would bring.
Thus, she turned to Qin Feng, asking him to help her end her life.
Upon learning about Wu Jiajia's ordeal, Qin Feng, out of sympathy for her suffering, momentarily softened and agreed to her request.
She did not realize the severity of her actions until she was sentenced and came to understand her mistake.
Officer Li felt frustrated about this situation.
He believed that school education should include basic legal knowledge.
Otherwise, it would be terrifying if students viewed murder as a good deed.
