Wang Wei squatted down and said, "Oh, she mentioned that she came to find you, saying she was here to deliver something, but then she hurried off."
"The bamboo basket is still here; I forgot to take it back."
Grandfather walked over and opened the courtyard gate. Sure enough, there was a bamboo basket placed at the base of the wall.
"Come in."
Wang Wei stood up and followed him into the courtyard.
Grandfather looked at the courtyard wall and asked, "What happened here?"
Wang Wei scratched his head awkwardly. "Last night we slaughtered a sheep, and I didn't pay attention to getting it on the wall."
Grandfather nodded. "Ah, you slaughtered a sheep."
"This is a joyous occasion; your father has recovered from his illness, so it’s time to celebrate."
Wang Wei chuckled innocently. "Isn't that right?"
He led Grandfather into the East Room.
Old Wang was lying on the earthen bed.
He stared blankly at the ceiling, his expression devoid of emotion.
His body was emaciated, with loose skin sagging downwards.
His eye sockets were deeply sunken.
If it weren't for the movement of his eyeballs, he would resemble a skeleton.
Wang Wei walked over and called out, "Dad, my uncle has come to see you."
Old Wang's eyes shifted towards Grandfather.
After a long pause, he finally uttered, "Uncle."
His voice was hoarse and unpleasant, like nails scraping against a blackboard.
Grandfather approached the edge of the bed and asked, "Old Wang, how are you doing?"
Old Wang's lips moved, but no words came out.
He strained to roll his eyes, finally landing them on me.
For some reason, his gaze made me feel uncomfortable all over.
It was as if I was being targeted by something.
I shifted behind Grandfather.
Grandfather sensed something was off and blocked my view of Old Wang, saying, "Old Wang, just lie still. If you need anything, just let me know."
Old Wang stared at him for a moment, opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.
In the end, he closed his eyes again.
Wang Wei turned to Grandfather and said, "Uncle, my dad's voice is hoarse."
"Maybe he's been lying down for too long," Grandfather replied with a nod. "Yes, take good care of him."
When I came out, Grandma had already prepared the meal.
She asked me to go to the storeroom and bring the food over, reminding me, "Leave some for your grandfather."
I was taken aback. "Where is Grandpa?"
She pointed towards the storeroom. "He's inside eating."
Confused, I carried the bowl to the storeroom.
Grandma was having her meal.
Seeing me enter, she quickly set down her chopsticks. "Just put the food on the table."
"You should go eat with Grandpa," I suggested.
I asked in confusion, "Why aren’t you going back to eat?"
She frowned. "I prefer eating here."
Not wanting to provoke her further, I dared not ask more questions and simply placed the food on the table before leaving.
The next day at noon.
Grandfather finished his meal and prepared to head out.
I hurried to catch up. "Grandfather, where are you going?"
He glanced back at me. "I'm going to see Wang Wei's father."
I quickly replied, "I want to go too."
He frowned. "What do you want to go for?"
I whispered, "I want to play with Xiao Fuzi."
Xiao Fuzi is Wang Wei's son, a year younger than me.
We used to play together often.
But ever since Wang Wei's father fell ill, I rarely went to see him.
Grandfather thought for a moment and nodded. "Alright, let's go."
We had just arrived at the Wang family's door.
A strong smell of blood assaulted the nostrils.
At the entrance of the Wang family's storeroom, blood was splattered on the walls and the ground.
The blood had not yet dried, indicating that it had happened recently.
I was so frightened that I hid behind Grandfather.
Hearing the commotion, Wang Wei came out from inside the house.
Seeing us standing at the door, he hurriedly beckoned us to come in.
Grandfather pointed at the storeroom and asked, "What happened?"
Wang Wei scratched his head awkwardly. "We killed a sheep last night."
"We're just celebrating that my father is better!"
Grandfather nodded and said nothing more.
We stepped inside.
