Wang Wei's Father lay on the earthen bed in the East Room.
His posture was exactly the same as yesterday.
When he saw us enter, his eyes shifted and landed on me.
I didn’t know why, but the way Wang Wei's Father looked at me sent a chill down my spine.
There was a rotten smell in the East Room.
Old Wang sat on the earthen bed.
His gaze was murky, and he was emaciated, with loose skin hanging down like that of a skinned frog that had somehow come to life.
The way he looked at people made one feel uncomfortable all over.
Grandfather moved closer to me, blocking his gaze.
“Old Wang, take care of yourself,” he said.
Wang Wei's Father’s lips moved, but no words came out.
Grandfather hurriedly added, “See? Your voice is really bad.”
“But it’s nothing serious.”
“You can still gesture to communicate.”
Wang Wei's Father remained silent, staring straight at him.
After a long while, he turned to Wang Wei and asked, “Son, do you think I have some strange illness?”
Wang Wei scratched his head and replied, “Who knows?”
“Anyway, you’re better now; don’t worry about anything else.”
Wang Wei's Father seemed to want to say something.
"Grandfather" stopped him, saying, "You've just recovered, so it's better to say less for now."
"Let's talk once you're completely better," he replied.
After that, he took my hand and led me outside.
"Wang Wei" chased after us, asking, "Uncle, aren't you going to eat before you leave?"
"Grandfather" waved his hand dismissively. "No need."
"The family has everything ready," Wang Wei insisted, trying to persuade him.
"Grandfather" frowned. "I told you not to see us off."
Wang Wei dared not say more and stood there watching us leave.
On the way home, "Grandfather" seemed a bit unusual.
He held my hand tightly, then loosened his grip, only to tighten it again.
Even his walking was a bit unsteady.
I asked in confusion, "Grandfather, are you okay?"
He glanced down at me without answering.
Instead, he pulled me along faster.
When we arrived home, "Grandma" was squatting in the yard scrubbing pots.
Seeing "Grandfather" return, she hurried over and asked, "How did it go?"
"Grandfather" remained silent.
He entered the house and poured himself a glass of water, gulping it down eagerly.
After finishing the water, he wiped his mouth and said, "Wang Wei's Father is back."
Grandma jumped in shock, "What did you say?"
Grandfather glanced outside before whispering, "Wang Wei's Father has a corpse mark on the back of his neck."
Grandma's face turned pale. "Are you saying…"
Grandfather nodded.
Grandma gasped, "Oh my goodness!"
Grandfather frowned disapprovingly. "Keep your voice down!"
Grandma quickly covered her mouth. "What should we do?"
Grandfather sighed. "Just stay away from their house."
"Even the living fear the Living Dead."
Grandma nodded repeatedly.
At that moment, Aunt Ma suddenly rushed in.
Her expression was frantic, and her voice trembled with tears. "Something terrible has happened!"
Grandfather frowned. "What happened?"
Aunt Ma wiped her tears with her hand. "Old Wang's son is gone!"
Grandfather was taken aback. "Who are you talking about?"
Aunt Ma choked on her words. "Xiao Fuzi!"
Xiao Fuzi was Wang Wei's son, a year younger than me.
We used to play together often.
But ever since Wang Wei's father fell ill, I rarely went to see him.
Hearing that Xiao Fuzi had died made me feel very sad.
Grandfather quickly got up and said, "Let's go take a look."
Wangjia Village is small, with only a few dozen households and less than a hundred people.
A crowd had gathered by the lake.
Wang Wei was squatting on the ground, holding Xiao Fuzi's lifeless body and crying heart-wrenchingly.
Xiao Fuzi had been in the water for a while, and his features were no longer recognizable.
There was a gaping wound the size of a bowl on his neck.
The blood had soaked through his clothes.
Grandfather sighed and patted Wang Wei on the shoulder. "Once a person is dead, they cannot come back to life."
"You must take care of yourself!"
Wang Wei looked up at Grandfather but said nothing.
At that moment, someone remarked, "This child was just fine this afternoon."
"How could he suddenly die?"
