Wang Wei wiped away a tear and said, "I don't know either."
The man replied, "There are water ghosts in this lake."
"I've heard that some people have drowned here."
Wang Wei suddenly looked up, "You're talking nonsense!"
The man shrank back, afraid to say anything more.
There was a rule in the village.
When a child died, they couldn't enter the main house.
Wang Wei placed his son in the storage room.
With red eyes, he asked his grandfather, "Uncle, how should we handle my son's funeral?"
Grandfather thought for a moment, "Let's find a place to bury him."
Wang Wei nodded.
At that moment, someone asked, "Isn't Old Wang's Family's coffin already prepared?"
"Why not use that one?"
Wang Wei's expression changed.
He looked at Grandfather with suspicion and dissatisfaction in his eyes, "Uncle, are you trying to harm my son?"
Grandfather was taken aback, "What nonsense are you talking about?"
Wang Wei snorted coldly, "If my son sleeps in that coffin, won't my wife be heartbroken when she comes back?"
Grandfather understood his meaning and frowned disapprovingly, "You're overthinking it."
The villagers helped Wang Wei take care of everything.
He dug a simple grave for his son.
Xiao Fuzi was covered with a white cloth.
Bloodstains had seeped through the fabric.
Wang Wei, with red eyes, pulled me aside and said, "Bian Ming, let's wait until Uncle has time to come play with you."
"I'll bring you some good food then," he added.
I nodded, "Okay."
A few elderly villagers gathered around Xiao Fuzi, murmuring their condolences.
In the end, it was Wang Wei who personally carved the tombstone.
However, he didn’t rush to set it up; instead, he took it home for his father to write on.
Wang Wei's Father was an educated man.
He had always been a teacher in the village.
The villagers held him in high regard.
After Wang Wei's Father fell ill, many people came to visit him.
Especially the older folks; nearly all of them paid their respects.
Except for Grandfather and Grandma.
After the funeral concluded, the villagers gradually returned home.
Only Wang Wei remained by the lakeside.
He squatted by the grave, staring blankly at his son's remains.
Grandfather wanted to stay too but was persuaded to leave by Grandma.
"It's getting late now," she said.
"What good is it for you to stay here?"
Grandfather sighed, "That's true."
At that moment, Wang Wei suddenly called out to Grandfather, "Uncle, wait a minute."
Grandfather stopped in his tracks.
Wang Wei ran over from the lakeside, "Uncle, don't take what I said earlier to heart."
Grandfather smiled, "What did you say?"
Wang Wei scratched his head awkwardly, "You know what I mean."
Grandfather patted his shoulder, "It's from Old Wang's Family; you should head back."
"Get a good night's sleep, and everything will be fine when you wake up."
Wang Wei remained silent.
Grandfather looked into the distance, "I know you don't want to hear this."
"But I still have to remind you."
Wang Wei was taken aback, "What are you talking about?"
Grandfather's expression turned serious, "Your father might be a Living Dead."
Wang Wei's face changed, "You're talking nonsense!"
Grandfather frowned, "You're old enough; don't you understand anything?"
"The Living Dead aren't scary."
"What’s frightening is when the Living Dead start to speak."
Wang Wei was stunned, "What do you mean?"
Grandfather looked behind him, his eyes filled with terror.
He took a step forward and pulled Wang Wei back, saying, "Don't look back!"
"Listen to me, just run!"
Wang Wei looked confused. "Uncle, what are you talking about?"
He turned to look back.
"Run!" Grandfather shouted urgently.
After saying that, he picked me up and ran towards home.
I was so scared that I cried.
Grandmother shouted from behind, "What’s wrong, dear?"
Grandfather yelled while running, "Don’t ask! Just close the door!"
Grandmother was frightened but still obeyed and closed the courtyard gate.
She rushed into the house and asked Grandfather, "What happened?"
Grandfather handed me to her and turned to grab a kitchen knife. "I need to check on Wang Wei."
Grandmother grabbed his arm. "Are you crazy?"
Grandfather shook her off. "I can't just let him die in front of me!"
