Today’s work was still tense yet orderly. I typed quickly on the keyboard, and the documents took shape on the screen one by one. As the secretary of Mao Yixuan, my work has always been impeccable. No matter how heavy the tasks were, I could maintain my composure and confidence.
Suddenly, my phone screen lit up, and my fingers instinctively paused— it was a message from Li Ce.
For two years, Li Ce had suddenly appeared in my life, disrupting the peace I had once known. Looking at the words dancing on the screen, I couldn’t help but grip my phone tightly.
“Han Xiao, I’m back. Let’s meet.”
His words were concise and direct, yet they cut through the emotions I had buried for years like a sharp knife. The man who once made me reckless had returned to my life.
“Security Han,” came Mao Yixuan’s voice, pulling me back from my chaotic thoughts. His figure appeared before me, brow slightly furrowed, wearing his usual serious expression. “Is the conference room ready?”
I quickly tucked away my phone and handed him the documents. “Everything is prepared; we can start anytime.”
Mao Yixuan glanced at the files, nodded, and his expression remained calm as usual. However, his gaze lingered on my face for a moment, as if he noticed something. He said nothing more and turned to walk toward the conference room. My heart tightened; he surely didn’t notice my brief distraction, did he?
After the meeting concluded, Mao Yixuan stood by the window, seemingly lost in thought.
I was tidying up the documents and about to leave when he suddenly spoke up: “Han Xiao, you seem… a bit off lately.”
I paused for a moment before smiling. “Off? I’ve been fulfilling my duties all along.”
“I’m talking about you.” His gaze was probing. “You weren’t as focused today.”
“So Manager Mao is giving me psychological counseling today?” I feigned lightness to mask the turmoil inside.
He smiled slightly and said earnestly, “If you need it, I can help you.”
His concern caught me off guard for a moment, but I quickly adjusted my emotions to avoid sinking too deep.
“If you say that, people might think I’m in some big trouble.”
His gaze softened with that familiar warmth. “Can’t I care about my secretary?”
I chuckled lightly. “If there really were an issue, Manager Mao would have probably docked my salary by now.”
He raised an eyebrow, his tone laced with a hint of jest. "Don't worry, my secretary never disappoints me." After a pause, he added softly, "But if you don't want to talk, I won't push you."
His words made my heart flutter slightly, the distance I had tried to maintain seemed to soften under his gentle tone.
I bit my lip, suddenly unsure of how to respond.
Just then, my phone vibrated again. Looking down, I saw it was from Li Ce.
My hand trembled, and the phone almost slipped from my grasp. Mao Yixuan noticed the name on the screen and a flicker of confusion crossed his eyes. He didn’t press further but instead said quietly, “Are you free tonight? We could chat.”
I was taken aback. He usually didn’t take the initiative to meet after work, especially not for a reason that didn’t involve work. His gaze was sincere and gentle, devoid of any pressure; it seemed he just wanted to offer me a chance to relax. I hesitated slightly, torn about how to decline.
“Don’t worry, it’s not work,” he smiled, his tone casual yet giving the impression that he saw through everything. “I just want you to take a break.”
I managed a weak smile, but my mind was more chaotic because of Li Ce's message.
“I might not be able to tonight; let’s do it another day,” I found an excuse, trying to keep my tone steady.
Mao Yixuan didn’t insist further; he simply said softly, “Alright, whenever you’re free.”
I nodded as I watched him leave, feeling a swirl of confusion inside me. Li Ce's message lingered on the screen, and that unhealed wound seemed ready to crack open again.
Location: Café
I walked into the café, shedding the fatigue of the entire day.
Once seated, I gently loosened my heels, and a wave of relaxation spread from my ankles.
“Did the project with Mao Yixuan wrap up?” Lin Xiao asked curiously as she picked up her coffee.
“Yeah, finally got it done,” I replied casually. “We had meetings all afternoon; my head feels like it’s going to explode.” Lin Xiao smiled slightly, her gaze meaningful.
“But haven’t things been a lot easier lately? Mao Yixuan seems quite attentive towards you.”
I paused for a moment before responding with a faint smile. “You’re overthinking it; it’s just work.” She shook her head and chuckled softly. “Don’t lie to me. The way he looks at you is definitely not how he looks at a subordinate.”
I was just about to retort when my phone suddenly vibrated. It was a message from Mao Yixuan: "Are you free for dinner tonight? I want to discuss something with you."
Lin Xiao leaned in to take a look, and I quickly tucked my phone away. "It's work-related," I said, trying to cover up.
She raised an eyebrow with a smile. "Oh? How mysterious!"
I smiled lightly. "It might just be about his work arrangements." Lin Xiao shook her head meaningfully. "Han Xiao, if someone really cares about you, you shouldn't always be on guard."
Location: Restaurant
"Thank you for coming," Mao Yixuan said as he sat across from me, a hint of a smile on his lips, his fingers gently tapping on the table.
The restaurant's lighting was soft and not harsh on the eyes, creating an atmosphere that made it hard not to relax. I looked at him, trying to keep my emotions calm.
"Actually, I have some things I want to talk about too," I said with a slight smile, attempting to mask my inner tension.
"You seem a bit distracted lately," Mao Yixuan said directly, his tone gentle but his gaze still serious as ever. "Is work stressing you out? If there’s anything bothering you, I can help."
"Nothing much," I replied softly, feeling a bit awkward. It was hard to avoid Mao Yixuan's gaze; he always seemed to catch even the slightest changes in me.
"Han Xiao, you're too used to carrying everything on your own," Mao Yixuan paused for a moment, his tone becoming even softer. "You can rely on me; don’t always bear it all alone."
