"Have you seen the news?" His voice was calm, but I could sense the suppressed emotions beneath it.
"Yes, I..." I wanted to explain, but I didn't know where to start.
"I will handle this matter," he paused for a moment before adding, "However... I hope you can give me an explanation."
On the other end of the line, his tone was no longer the gentle one I was used to.
The speed at which the news spread was beyond my imagination; social media was flooded with various speculations and comments.
The atmosphere in the office had also turned tense, with everyone looking at me with complex emotions in their eyes.
My work efficiency plummeted, and the pile of documents on my desk grew mountains high, yet I found it hard to concentrate.
The pressure from public opinion made me feel anxious, and facing Mao Yixuan only intensified my guilt.
The misunderstanding from last night had yet to be resolved, and the news report complicated everything further. Even if he believed me, how could I explain?
I picked up my phone but didn't know how to start. Should I call him? What would I say? That Li Ce and I had already ended things, and last night was just an accidental reunion?
But it seemed impossible to clarify everything simply.
Just as I was drowning in confusion, Li Ce's message flashed into view.
"I can help you sort this all out."
I froze, staring at the screen that flickered with those words. I wasn't surprised that he would reach out; perhaps he had anticipated that I would find myself in trouble due to this public relations crisis. After all, Li Ce had enough resources and connections to resolve this turmoil.
But could I accept his help?
This choice plunged me into deeper conflict. On one hand, I didn't want to owe anyone a favor, nor did I want to remain entangled with him; on the other hand, the pressure from public opinion was suffocating.
As night fell, the café gradually emptied. Lin Xiao and I sat at a corner table, scattered magazines and unfinished coffee cups littering the surface. After last night's turmoil, my mood remained heavy, my mind repeatedly replaying thoughts of Mao Yixuan and Li Ce.
"Why would you choose to avoid this? It's not like you," Lin Xiao said, sipping her coffee while looking at me with concern in her eyes.
"Avoid? I just want to sort everything out," I replied with a bitter smile, feeling a wave of helplessness. Lin Xiao's concern warmed me but also made me more anxious. Our conversation seemed blocked by my hesitation and anxiety.
"You’re a brave girl; why let others' opinions change who you are?" She looked directly at me, her gaze firm. "You have feelings for Mao Yixuan; there's nothing to hide. You need to face your heart courageously."
"I don’t know how to face him," I lowered my head, my voice faint. "There are misunderstandings between us, and now I'm caught up in this public uproar. I'm afraid..."
"Afraid of what?" Lin Xiao interrupted, her tone filled with encouragement. "Afraid he won't like you? Or afraid you'll get hurt?"
I fell silent, my thoughts in disarray. Deep down, I knew that when it came to Mao Yixuan, all I needed was honesty and courage. But the shadows of past emotions made it hard for me to let go completely.
"Face it bravely. No matter the outcome, trust your choice," Lin Xiao gently took my hand, giving me strength.
The next day, I mustered the courage to seek out Mao Yixuan. Though I still felt a bit uneasy inside, I knew this was something I had to do.
I knocked on his office door, and his voice came from inside: "Come in."
Taking a deep breath, I pushed the door open. Mao Yixuan was focused on his computer work; when he saw me enter, he paused for a moment before breaking into a faint smile. "Han Xiao, what brings you here?"
"I wanted to talk to you," I said as I sat down, trying my best to appear calm despite the tumult of emotions swirling within me.
"About yesterday?" He furrowed his brow slightly, clearly still uncertain about the misunderstanding from last night.
"I want to tell you that my feelings for Li Ce have passed." I looked directly into his eyes, my voice steady. "His return has indeed troubled me, but I understand what I want now."
Mao Yixuan's gaze lingered on my face for a moment before he said, "I can sense your struggle, Han Xiao. If there's anything on your mind that you want to share, I'm here."
"I hope we can clarify things." I bit my lip slightly, summoning my courage. "I don't want to run away anymore. No matter what the outside voices say, I choose to trust my own feelings."
A few days later, we met with our manager, A Yong, in the office to discuss how to handle the public relations crisis.
"Right now, everyone's eyes are on you two; you must take the initiative," A Yong said as he handed over a plan. "Clarify your relationship and use social media to shift public opinion."
"We don't want to complicate things further," I hesitated to say.
"That's exactly the point of taking the initiative to clarify," A Yong replied with a faint smile. "By taking control, public opinion won't go off track."
Mao Yixuan nodded and looked at me. "We'll face this together."
With the release of our statement, we gradually gained the upper hand. Supportive voices began to emerge on social media, and public sentiment started to shift.
