A glimmer of killing intent flashed in Lin Yuan's eyes as he prepared to strike, but Xi Men Lian suddenly turned and vanished into the thick fog.
"Don't chase after him," Su Jiu'er said, pulling Lin Yuan back. "We need to deal with this first." She pointed at the sealed Red Sphere on the stone platform.
Lin Yuan took a deep breath, suppressing the anger rising within him. "You're right. We need to take this thing back for research."
Just then, Zhou Haoran exclaimed, "Wait, look!"
The three of them turned in unison to see the ground around the stone platform beginning to shake violently, cracks spreading like a spiderweb. Suddenly, the entire ground collapsed, revealing a deep underground space.
"Oh my god," Zhou Haoran said, dumbfounded. "What is this? A dungeon? Or an alien secret base?"
Su Jiu'er chuckled lightly. "Don't be silly. This is clearly some kind of ancient relic. Look at those runes and carvings; they must be at least a thousand years old."
Lin Yuan scrutinized the scene before him. The underground space was circular, about a hundred meters in diameter, with complex runes carved into the walls. In the center stood a massive stone platform adorned with five interconnected rings, each containing a unique symbol.
"This is... the Five Elements Formation?" Lin Yuan said in surprise. "I never expected to see such an advanced array in a place like this."
Su Jiu'er nodded. "Not only that, but look at those runes; some clearly exhibit characteristics of ancient Thai spells. This formation integrates elements from multiple cultures, and its complexity exceeds our imagination."
Zhou Haoran pulled out a small scanner and began scanning the entire space. "The energy readings are extremely unstable," he frowned. "This formation seems to still be operational, and... wait, what's this?"
He pointed to an anomalous reading on the scanner. Lin Yuan and Su Jiu'er leaned in to take a look, and saw a strange energy fluctuation pattern displayed on the screen, resembling the heartbeat of some kind of lifeform.
"Could it be," Lin Yuan pondered aloud, "that this formation itself is a lifeform?"
At that moment, the underground space suddenly lit up with a blinding light. The symbols within the Five Circles began to glow, and energies of Gold, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth flowed through the formation, creating an extraordinary display of light and shadow.
"My goodness," Zhou Haoran said in awe. "This is even more dazzling than the light show I saw in Las Vegas!"
Su Jiu'er furrowed her brow. "Something's not right. This energy fluctuation... it feels like some kind of summoning ritual."
As soon as she finished speaking, a low, resonant chant suddenly echoed throughout the space. The voice was ancient and mysterious, carrying an indescribable pressure.
"Is this... Thai?" Lin Yuan strained to decipher it. "It sounds like it's saying, 'Great Five Element Spirits, please descend and purify the world's filth'... Wait, purify?"
Suddenly, the energy within the Five Circles surged toward the center, forming a massive Energy Vortex. A powerful suction emanated from the vortex, pulling everything around it into its depths.
"Be careful!" Lin Yuan shouted as he activated the Time Manipulator, trying to slow down the rotation of the Energy Vortex. However, the force was far beyond his expectations; the Time Manipulator could only barely affect the edges of the vortex.
Su Jiu'er quickly unfolded the Nine-Tailed Fox Barrier, enveloping the three of them within it. Zhou Haoran pulled out a specially crafted silver needle, creating an Energy Barrier to further strengthen their defense.
"What does this thing want?" Zhou Haoran exclaimed. "Is it trying to purify us as 'filth'?"
Just as Lin Yuan was about to respond, he suddenly felt dizzy. To his shock, he realized that his Lingqi was being forcibly drawn out of him and flowing toward the Energy Vortex.
"This is bad!" he shouted. "This formation is absorbing our Lingqi! We have to find a way to interrupt it!"
Su Jiu'er gritted her teeth. "Let me try!" She formed hand seals, and nine illusory fox tails unfurled behind her, each tip gathering a sphere of spiritual energy.
"Ninth-Tailed Sealing Technique!" she cried out, sending nine streams of spiritual energy shooting forth to precisely strike the connection points of the Five Circles.
However, the formation merely trembled slightly before returning to its original state. Not only that, but the suction of the Energy Vortex seemed to intensify.
"Damn it," Su Jiu'er said with a pale face. "This formation is too powerful; my sealing technique has no effect at all."
Zhou Haoran's eyes suddenly lit up. "Wait a minute! I have an idea!" He rummaged through his backpack and pulled out a small vial containing a shimmering silver liquid.
"This is my latest developed Spirit Neutralizer," he explained. "In theory, it can temporarily suppress the activity of Lingqi. If we inject it into the core of the formation..."
Lin Yuan's eyes lit up. "That makes sense! But the question is, how do we get it to the core?"
Zhou Haoran scratched his head. "Uh... well..."
At that moment, Lin Yuan suddenly had an idea. He looked at the sealed Red Sphere on the stone platform, a glint of determination flashing in his eyes.
"I have a crazy idea," he said, "but I need your cooperation."
After briefly explaining the plan, Lin Yuan took a deep breath and charged toward the stone platform. Meanwhile, Su Jiu'er and Zhou Haoran did their best to maintain the defense, buying him time.
Lin Yuan reached the stone platform and unhesitatingly grabbed the Red Sphere. A wave of intense pain shot through his body, as if countless small knives were darting around inside him.
Gritting his teeth, Lin Yuan endured the agony and injected Zhou Haoran's Spirit Neutralizer into the sphere. Then, with all his strength, he hurled the sphere toward the center of the Energy Vortex.
"Now's our chance!" Lin Yuan shouted.
Su Jiu'er immediately lowered the protective shield, while Zhou Haoran manipulated silver needles to create a thrust that sent the sphere into the vortex's core.
A deafening explosion echoed through the underground space, causing violent tremors. The Energy Vortex suddenly stopped spinning, and the symbols within the Five Circles began to dim.
"Did we succeed?" Zhou Haoran asked cautiously.
As soon as he spoke, a more powerful wave of energy erupted. The symbols in the Five Circles lit up again, but this time they were not a single color; instead, five colors intertwined to form a strange radiance.
"No," Su Jiu'er exclaimed, her face paling. "It seems we've activated something!"
As she spoke, five beams of light shot out from the rings, converging in mid-air. A blurry humanoid silhouette gradually took shape within the glow, emanating an unsettling pressure.
"I am one of the Five Element Spirits," a commanding voice resonated. "Who has awakened me from my slumber?"
The three of them exchanged glances, unsure of how to respond. Just then, Lin Yuan suddenly had a brilliant idea.
"Great Five Element Spirits," he stepped forward respectfully and said, "we are cultivators from the future. We have discovered that the Lingqi in this world is unbalanced and hope to receive your guidance."
The Five Element Spirits fell silent for a moment, seemingly deep in thought. Then it slowly spoke, "The imbalance of Lingqi is indeed a serious issue. However, since you have managed to awaken me, you must also have a solution."
Lin Yuan felt a surge of joy in his heart and was about to continue speaking when the Five Element Spirits suddenly changed its tone, "However, you trespassed into this place and disrupted the operation of the formation; such an offense cannot be forgiven. As punishment, you must pass my test."
"What test?" Zhou Haoran couldn't help but ask.
The Five Element Spirits did not answer directly but waved its hand to draw five symbols in the air. "Gold, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth—these five elements interact with each other. If you can find the balance among these five elements within the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, I will reveal to you the truth about the imbalance of Lingqi. If you fail..." Its tone suddenly turned ominous, "then you shall remain here forever, becoming part of the formation."
As soon as the words left its mouth, the five symbols transformed into five beams of light that shot towards Lin Yuan and his companions. Lin Yuan felt a dizzying sensation as everything around him spun. When he regained his senses, he found himself in an unfamiliar space.
Surrounded by a vast expanse of white mist, he could see nothing clearly. Lin Yuan attempted to reach out to Su Jiu'er and Zhou Haoran but discovered that his spiritual awareness was completely cut off.
"It seems this is the beginning of the test," Lin Yuan muttered to himself. "I wonder how those two are doing. I hope they don't mess things up; otherwise, we might really end up as antiques here."
Taking a deep breath, Lin Yuan began to carefully observe his surroundings for any possible clues. However, just then, a sudden and intense headache struck him.
"What’s happening?" Lin Yuan clutched his head, feeling darkness closing in on him. In the last moments before losing consciousness, he vaguely saw five points of light flickering before his eyes, as if trying to convey something...
