As night fell, the fields were enveloped in darkness, illuminated only by the flickering light of fireflies.
Xiao You and A Ze placed the captured fireflies at the edge of the field, watching them dance within the glass jar, emitting a faint glow.
“A Ze, let’s set them free,” Xiao You suddenly said.
“Free?” A Ze was taken aback. “We worked hard to catch them.”
“Yeah,” Xiao You nodded. “They belong to this field; they should be free to fly.”
A Ze looked at Xiao You, her eyes filled with care and respect for the fireflies.
He suddenly felt that he should learn to cherish these small lives just like Xiao You did.
“Alright, let’s release them,” A Ze agreed.
Together, they opened the lid of the jar and gently set the fireflies free, one by one.
The fireflies soared into the night sky, twinkling like stars, merging into the brilliant expanse of the Milky Way.
“They’ve gone home,” Xiao You whispered.
A Ze nodded, feeling as if he had also discovered a sense of belonging.
They sat side by side on the edge of the field, gazing up at the starry sky.
The summer night sky was particularly beautiful, countless stars shimmering like diamonds embedded in a deep blue canvas.
“A Ze, look! That’s the Milky Way,” Xiao You pointed to a faint band of light in the sky.
Following her finger, A Ze saw the river of stars stretching across the heavens, flowing gently through the night.
“It’s so beautiful!” A Ze exclaimed.
Having grown up in the city, he rarely had the chance to witness such a magnificent starry sky.
"A Ze, do you know?" Xiao You said. "Grandma says that every star represents a wish."
"A wish?" A Ze asked.
"Yes," Xiao You nodded. "If you make a wish on a star, it will come true."
"Really?" A Ze sounded a bit skeptical.
"Of course it's true!" Xiao You replied. "If you don't believe me, you can try it."
A Ze looked at Xiao You, her eyes sparkling under the starlight, like two little stars.
Suddenly, he believed her words.
He closed his eyes, clasped his hands together, and silently made a wish.
He wished to always have a pure and kind heart like Xiao You's, to always possess this joy and freedom.
When he opened his eyes, he saw Xiao You also making a wish on a star.
"What did you wish for?" A Ze asked curiously.
Xiao You smiled and said, "That's a secret; I can't tell you."
A Ze didn't press further; he knew everyone had their own secrets.
They sat quietly on the ridge, watching the stars and feeling each other's presence.
"A Ze," Xiao You suddenly said, "will you come back after summer vacation?"
A Ze was taken aback; he hadn't thought about that question.
He didn't know if he would return.
"I... I don't know," A Ze said.
A glimmer of disappointment flashed in Xiao You's eyes, but she quickly broke into a smile.
"It's okay," she said, "no matter if you come back or not, we are still friends."
A Ze looked at Xiao You; her smile was so genuine, so warm.
Suddenly, he felt that he had to return, that he had to see Xiao You again.
"I will come back," A Ze said firmly. "I will definitely come back."
Xiao You smiled and reached out her hand, gently grasping A Ze's.
"Let's make a pinky promise," she said. "This is our agreement."
A Ze extended his hand as well, linking his pinky with Xiao You's.
"Pinky promise, one hundred years without changing," Xiao You said.
"Pinky promise, one hundred years without changing," A Ze repeated.
Their promise was witnessed by the fireflies under the starry sky.
