I lay on the delivery bed in the hospital, sweat soaking my forehead, the pain nearly causing me to lose consciousness.
But when I heard the loud cry echoing through the room, all my suffering vanished.
"Congratulations! It's a healthy boy!" The doctor smiled as he handed me the baby wrapped in a blue blanket.
I trembled as I took this little life into my arms. His wrinkled face was flushed, his eyes tightly shut, and his tiny hands were clenched into fists.
In that moment, I felt an unprecedented happiness and fulfillment.
"Shen Yi, come and see your son," I softly called out to my husband who was anxiously waiting outside.
Shen Yi rushed into the room, his face filled with tension and anticipation.
When he saw the little one in my arms, his usually steady eyes instantly glistened with tears.
"Can I... hold him?" Shen Yi asked cautiously, uncertainty lacing his voice.
I smiled and nodded, gently passing the child to him.
The moment Shen Yi took the baby, his hands trembled slightly as if he were cradling the most precious treasure in the world.
He looked down at the little life in his arms, his eyes filled with indescribable love and pride.
"Hey there, little guy, I'm your dad," he said softly, his voice tender beyond belief.
In that moment, I saw Shen Yi's softest side; the man who commanded respect in the business world was now transformed by this tiny life into someone so gentle.
"What should we name him?" Shen Yi looked up at me, his eyes sparkling with expectation.
I thought for a moment and softly said, "Shen Nianwei. 'Nian' means longing; 'Wei' is taken from my name. This way, his name carries our thoughts and love for each other."
Shen Yi's eyes lit up, and he nodded, leaning down to kiss the child's forehead. "Shen Nianwei, what a lovely name. From now on, you are the fruit of our love and the witness to our happiness."
The door to the hospital room was gently pushed open, and my mother peeked in, her face brimming with anticipation.
"Where's my grandson? Let me see him!" She hurried to the bedside, eagerly reaching out her hands toward Shen Yi.
With a smile, Shen Yi handed the child to her. As she cradled him in her arms, tears immediately welled up in her eyes.
"Oh my, what a beautiful little one!" she exclaimed, beaming with joy. "Look at that little nose; it's just like yours when you were a child!"
I leaned against the headboard, watching this heartwarming scene unfold, filled with happiness.
Before long, Shen Yi's parents rushed in as well. The moment they saw their grandson, the joy on their faces was indescribable.
"This child looks just like Shen Yi did when he was little!" Mother Shen said excitedly, her eyes full of affection.
"No, I think he resembles Lin Wei more, especially those eyes," Father Shen countered with a smile.
Watching the two elders argue over their grandson's appearance made Shen Yi and me exchange a sweet smile, our hearts brimming with warmth.
Once we returned home, our lives were completely taken over by this little one.
Every night, I would be awakened by the sound of his cries. Yet every time I prepared to get up, Shen Yi would gently press down on my shoulder.
"Rest easy; I'll take care of it," he would say before getting up to tend to the baby.
I often find myself in a half-dreaming state, seeing Shen Yi gently walking around the room with the baby in his arms, humming a lullaby that is off-key.
The man who once commanded the business world with an iron fist has now transformed into a gentle father, and this contrast fills my heart with emotion.
Shen Yi quickly mastered all the skills needed to care for a child—changing diapers, preparing formula, and soothing the baby to sleep; he excelled at everything.
One time, I caught him intently changing the baby's diaper, his movements so practiced that he resembled a professional nanny.
"When did you learn all this?" I asked curiously.
He looked up and smiled at me, "I secretly watched a lot of parenting videos while you were pregnant and consulted experienced friends. I wanted to be prepared so that you wouldn’t have to struggle too much."
His response warmed my heart, and I couldn't help but feel tears welling up in my eyes.
As time passed, Xiao Nianwei grew day by day. Every smile, every attempt to stand, and every babbling moment became the most precious memories in our lives with Shen Yi.
We witnessed every significant milestone in his life together: his first roll over, his first crawl, and his first steps.
Each time, Shen Yi would become as excited as a child himself, pulling out his phone to capture these precious moments and eagerly sharing them with everyone.
"Look at my son; isn’t he exceptionally smart?" he would always say proudly, his eyes filled with joy.
Sometimes, after Xiao Nianwei fell asleep, Shen Yi and I would sit on the balcony hand in hand, quietly gazing at the stars in the night sky.
"Do you regret it?" I suddenly asked one time.
"Regret what?" Shen Yi looked at me in confusion.
"I regret being with me, I regret having this kind of life," I whispered, a sudden wave of unease washing over me.
Shen Yi chuckled softly and pulled me into his embrace. "Lin Wei, that question of yours is quite silly. The best decision I've ever made in my life is marrying you and building this family together."
His words were firm and sincere, dispelling all the unease in my heart.
I leaned against his shoulder, feeling his warmth and strength, my heart filled with happiness and contentment.
I knew we would watch Xiao Nianwei grow up together, experience the ups and downs of life side by side, grow old together, and reminisce about the beautiful moments of the past.
Our love story may be ordinary, but it is real and beautiful.
From meeting to falling in love, from misunderstandings to understanding, from separation to reunion, we have been through so much and ultimately found our own happiness.
This is not a fairy tale ending of "happily ever after," but the little bits of reality—mundane moments filled with daily life and the warmth of supporting each other.
I knew we would continue to be this happy forever.
Because the most beautiful form of love is not grandiose vows but the simple companionship; it is not fleeting passion but a lifetime of commitment.
And Shen Yi and I have already found our happy ending.
This is not the end of our journey but the beginning of a new life.
