Mo Wen climbed up from the edge of the cliff, holding Xiao Hei in his arms. At that moment, he looked quite disheveled. During their journey, they had encountered several collapses of the plank road, and there were two or three times when both he and Xiao Hei nearly fell into the molten lava below. Just moments ago, the plank road beneath their feet had suddenly broken apart; had it not been for his quick reflexes, they would likely be swimming in lava right now. He glanced at the Butcher Knife in his hand and silently cursed Old Lu for being stingy.
"Once I get out of here, I must get my own weapon and some exploration gear. It’s too dangerous without any support," Mo Wen muttered to himself as he pressed on. After sliding down into the pit and encountering the recent collapse, he realized that if he had proper exploration equipment, he wouldn’t be in such a predicament. His dissatisfaction with his own strength surged again; if he had sufficient power, bathing in this lava would be a trivial matter.
He had no idea how long he and Xiao Hei had been wandering underground. Even with his Speed Realm cultivation, he was starting to feel fatigued. By his estimation, they had been traveling underground for about five or six days. Initially, their pace was not slow, but they had slowed down significantly later on to guard against unexpected changes. He guessed that he and Xiao Hei had covered around two hundred Bird Journeys underground. What surprised him was Xiao Hei; despite being just an ordinary Beast, it had managed to keep up this entire time and still looked energetic.
After sitting down to eat some meat and drink water, they rested for about a stick of incense before continuing on their way. Mo Wen initially intended to rest longer, but seeing that Xiao Hei had already set off, he felt that as a Speed Realm Cultivator, he couldn’t lose to a Beast. Driven by this competitive spirit, he hurried to catch up.
Ahead, the underground cave gradually opened up, and the Lava River beneath them began to slow down. The surroundings became more varied; some fire flowers were growing on the stone walls, and the Fire Spirit Power in the air thickened. After walking a bit further, Fire Spirit Crystals started appearing on the walls. Seeing all this made Mo Wen excited; although the Fire Spirit Crystals before him didn’t meet mining standards in terms of size or purity, there should be better ones ahead. Imagining the bounty that lay ahead made him quicken his pace. However, the anticipated scene did not materialize; after advancing a short distance, the flowers began to dwindle, and the expected Fire Spirit Crystals failed to appear. The surroundings grew barren as if something had gnawed at them.
Mo Wen and Xiao Hei arrived at a lake where the Lava River curved and pooled into a Lava Lake. Rather than a lake, it resembled a small basin with a circumference of only about a hundred feet. On the other side of the lake was an opening through which lava continued to flow forward. Above the lake was likely a volcano, with light streaming in through its crater. The edges of the lake were surrounded by solidified lava, forming a ring of smoking shores.
Xiao Hei stopped about four or five yards from Lava Lake, watching the surface of the water warily. Mo Wen had already noticed movement within the lake; it was inhabited by Demon Beasts. However, his attention was drawn to a metallic gleam in the center of the lake—likely a rare Refining Material.
