A punch struck the Chimera, electric arcs flashing and billowing black smoke. The Chimera's form dissipated.
"Hehe!..." The Three-Armed Chihui reappeared not far from Mo Wen. Mo Wen launched another attack.
Mo Wen stowed away a green orb the size of a thumb, the trophy from killing the previous Three-Armed Chihui. After the battle, he had gained a direct understanding of the Chimera's peculiarities. His head still felt heavy as he checked his backpack for Xiao Hei, finding nothing unusual before sitting down to recuperate. After a stick of incense burned out, he set off again.
"Woo... woo..." A horn echoed in Mo Wen's mind, causing him to stumble mid-run and nearly fall.
"Damn it, it really won't leave me alone." After cursing, he continued running. Mo Wen had lost count of how many times he had been in such a desperate situation. He was heading south with the principle of "avoid if possible, run if you can't win." However, this creature had been chasing him for a day and night. They had fought several times, each encounter evenly matched, but Mo Wen always chose to flee. The Chimera was relentless in its pursuit. Mo Wen didn't dare use his full speed; even if he did, he wasn't confident he could shake off his pursuer. Besides, using his full speed would leave him weakened for a period, and in this perilous place, weakness could easily mean death.
"Woo... woo..."
"Stop howling; let me find a place to bury you." To kill the Haohao Chi behind him, he needed to find a suitable spot to set a trap. Mo Wen suddenly quickened his pace.
In an open area, Mo Wen quickly set up his trap and positioned himself behind it, waiting for Haohao Chi to arrive. Two minutes later, Haohao Chi appeared—wolf-like with green light emanating from its seven orifices. This green glow was stronger than that of the Three-Armed Chihui he had just killed. The color of the light from the orifices indicated the Chimera's rank, while its intensity represented its strength.
Facing Haohao Chi, Mo Wen extended his right hand and beckoned with his index finger, "Come here!" Sure enough, Haohao Chi charged toward him. "Activate!" As Haohao Chi fell into the trap, Mo Wen immediately activated the Symbol Array and dashed into it.
An hour later, Mo Wen emerged from the Symbol Array unscathed but pale. His battle with Haohao Chi had lasted an hour under the protection of the Symbol Array. It had been an exceptionally frustrating fight; to prevent Haohao Chi from damaging Xiao Hei in his backpack, Mo Wen had been forced into a passive position. Fortunately, these Chimera were skilled in sound waves and Divine Soul Attacks but not in physical combat. However, to kill them meant ensuring they completely dissipated and could not regenerate. Sitting on the ground, he took out the Chi Jing obtained from the Three-Armed Chihui and looked at the baby fist-sized Chi Jing from Haohao Chi in his hand, feeling conflicted.
Chi Jing was akin to a Demon Beast's Beast Core; after processing it and absorbing it, it could enhance a Cultivator's cultivation level. However, Chi Jing could increase a Cultivator's Shen Hun but contained harmful elements that Cultivators typically avoided absorbing or refining—especially Chi Jing, which harbored chaotic soul energy that could drive a Cultivator insane. The lower the rank of Chi Jing, the more chaotic its soul energy would be. The Chi Jing in Mo Wen's hand came from Non-Grade Chimeras and was usually discarded outright. Yet now he faced a dilemma: if he didn't absorb this Chi Jing, he would lose his fighting capability; if he did absorb it, the chaotic soul energy might lead him to madness. This was what troubled him.
He quickly made a decision: what he needed now was to survive; as for the effects of chaotic soul energy on him—he would figure that out later once he got out of here. Ever since leaving Qilin Cave, it seemed all his luck had run out; he had to ensure his combat strength because without it, nothing else mattered. Gripping a piece of Chi Jing tightly in one hand, Mo Wen stood up and continued forward; he needed to leave this place as soon as possible.
