"Brother Dog, stop talking. I understand," Zi Lan interrupted, startled by Mo Wen's words.
Standing at the mouth of the cave, he gazed at the scenery outside. Whenever there was a lull in fighting, he would take a moment to enjoy the view—sometimes standing by a tree, other times at the edge of a cliff. Observing the landscape had become a way for him to unwind, although such opportunities were rare. The sights helped him calm his mind.
When he saw the girl appear at the cave entrance, Mo Wen was taken aback. Zi Lan had changed into a black outfit, her long hair elegantly tied up, and her complexion was rosy, making her look much more beautiful than before. He had been pushed out by Zi Lan, who said she needed to tidy up. He couldn't comprehend why she needed to kick him out for her own grooming, but staying inside felt inappropriate; after all, he was still an inexperienced child.
"Brother Dog, what's wrong with you?" Seeing Mo Wen's expression, Zi Lan's face flushed red again.
"...You're too beautiful," Mo Wen blurted out unexpectedly, causing Zi Lan's cheeks to redden even more.
"Uh... I'm sorry, I meant we should get going." Realizing his slip of the tongue, Mo Wen's face turned red as well. He quickly adjusted his mindset and spoke.
"What are your plans next, Zi Gu Niang?" Although Zi Lan preferred that Mo Wen call her Lan'er, he felt it was too intimate for their current relationship. Besides, every time he thought of the name Lan'er, it stirred an indescribable feeling within him. So he continued to address her as Zi Gu Niang.
"Of course I'm going with you."
"Aren't you going to look for your lost teammates?"
"I'm not going. I don't even know where they are or if they're alive."
"What about your elders? Maybe you should wait around here for them to find you."
"Brother Dog, do you not want Lan'er anymore?" Zi Lan looked hurt; she felt that Mo Wen didn't want to take her along. The more she thought about it, the more aggrieved she became, tears almost spilling from her eyes.
"I... I didn't mean that! I just think if your teammates and elders can't find you, they'll be worried." Seeing Zi Lan's pitiful expression made Mo Wen anxious.
"If you don't want to take me with you, then forget it. Take care of yourself, Brother Dog." With a hurt expression, Zi Lan turned to leave.
"Hey, come back! Let's go."
"Really! Brother Dog, I knew you wouldn't have the heart to abandon me. Where are we going next?" Hearing Mo Wen's words, Zi Lan bounced back to his side and hugged his arm. Just a moment ago she was on the verge of tears; now her eyes were squinting with joy.
"Let's head south along the river."
"Can you let go of my arm first?"
"No! Unless you stop calling me Zi Gu Niang and start calling me Lan'er."
"Alright then... Lan'er. Can you let go now?"
"That's too forced; it doesn't count..."
The two of them bickered and disappeared into the forest. Mo Wen truly enjoyed his time with Zi Lan; every moment felt fulfilling, and he even wished that time could just stand still.
