At that moment, Ao Bing stepped forward. "Teacher Chen, may I ask which school regulation explicitly prohibits students with a troubled past from participating in the School Team competitions?"
Teacher Chen was momentarily at a loss for words. "While there isn't a written rule, it's an unwritten understanding..."
"An unwritten understanding is not the same as a regulation," Ao Bing calmly pointed out. "Moreover, Nezha performed exceptionally well during the selection trials; according to the principle of fair competition, he should be eligible to compete."
Teacher Chen frowned, clearly surprised that this usually quiet and studious student was suddenly speaking up for the Problem Student. "Ao Bing, I understand your concern for your friend, but the selection for the School Team not only values skill but also considers character and image."
"Then, how do you assess a person's character, Teacher Chen?" Ao Bing pressed on. "Is it through personal knowledge of their current performance, or merely based on past records and others' evaluations?"
Teacher Chen was taken aback by the question and didn't know how to respond.
"Many have noticed Nezha's efforts and changes during this time," Ao Bing continued. "If we don't even give him a chance to change, what is the meaning of our education?"
After a moment of silence, Teacher Chen sighed. "You make a valid point. But this decision isn't solely mine; it requires discussion with other coaching staff members."
"Then please organize a fair technical assessment," Ao Bing proposed. "Let Nezha have the opportunity to prove himself through his own abilities. If his performance truly falls short compared to other team members, then we have nothing more to say."
Teacher Chen considered this for a moment and nodded. "Alright, tomorrow morning at eight o'clock on the playground. I will arrange a special assessment; if you pass, you can join the School Team."
"Thank you, Teacher Chen!" Nezha exclaimed excitedly, finally seeing a glimmer of hope.
After leaving the Athletic Department office, Nezha was filled with excitement. "This is amazing! I will definitely perform well and prove myself to everyone!"
Ao Bing smiled slightly, "I believe you can do it."
"Thank you, Ao Bing," Nezha said sincerely, "If it weren't for you, I might have given up."
Ao Bing shook his head, "No, you wouldn't give up. You are Nezha, the one who never backs down and never gives in."
A flicker of emotion crossed Nezha's eyes; Ao Bing seemed to always see his truest self, understanding the resilience and determination deep within him.
That night, back in the dormitory, Nezha lay on his bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Tomorrow's assessment was crucial for him—not only did it determine whether he could participate in the competition, but it also related to proving that he had shed the labels of his past and become a new version of himself.
"Can't sleep?" Ao Bing's gentle voice broke the silence in the dark.
Nezha softly replied with a "Hmm," "I'm a bit nervous."
"Nervousness is normal," Ao Bing's voice was especially soothing in the darkness. "But you've prepared well. Trust yourself."
"What if I mess up tomorrow?" Nezha couldn't help but voice his worries.
"Then it just means there's room for improvement," Ao Bing answered calmly. "But that won't change who you are, nor will it diminish the effort and determination you've put in."
Nezha fell silent for a moment before quietly saying, "I don't want to disappoint you."
As soon as those words left his mouth, Nezha was taken aback. He suddenly realized that more than proving himself to everyone else, what mattered most was not letting Ao Bing down. Ao Bing's trust and support had become his greatest motivation to move forward.
"I won't change my opinion of you based on the outcome of the competition," Ao Bing said, his voice gentle yet firm. "What matters is how you see yourself, not how others see you."
