In March, just after returning from the most open city in the south, Hu Ruoyun welcomed an unexpected guest: Zhang Meina! The reason it was unexpected was that she hadn’t called beforehand and had come directly to Hu Ruoyun’s dormitory! This left him no choice but to decide whether to meet her or not.

In the dormitory, a few roommates noticed that Third Sister had a guest, especially since it was an unfamiliar girl. They all found reasons to leave, giving the two of them some privacy, but this only made Hu Ruoyun feel more uncomfortable.

He poured a glass of water and placed it in front of her, noticing that Zhang Meina looked noticeably thinner than before.

Hu Ruoyun nodded and awkwardly tried to comfort her, “It’s nothing; he’s just blowing smoke. There will be someone better suited for you!”
Zhang Meina managed a faint smile, though it seemed somewhat bitter. “I met him when I first came to school through our hometown gathering. He wooed me with sweet words. I guess I was vain; I thought he looked good and was a regular college student. But she wasn’t; she was merely someone he had met a few times during an arranged meeting.
For half the time they spent together, it was Zhang Meina doing all the talking while Hu Ruoyun quietly listened and occasionally refilled her glass.
At noon, he treated Zhang Meina to lunch at the school cafeteria. Both were in low spirits and had little appetite; their meal was tasteless.
After lunch, he walked her back to school. When they reached the bus stop, Zhang Meina suddenly hugged Hu Ruoyun and whispered in his ear: “Now I really regret it; if only I had held onto you back then…”
Hu Ruoyun didn’t dare hug her back but couldn’t bring himself to push her away either. In that moment of conflict, Zhang Meina released him on her own: “Thank you for listening to me for so long; I really envy Mao Na!” Then she turned and boarded the arriving bus, leaving Hu Ruoyun standing alone in the wind, feeling disoriented.
What on earth was happening?
Back in the dormitory, his roommates looked at him with strange expressions. The oldest among them, Zhao Jinpu, asked: “Third Sister, is that girl your classmate?”
"She's just a fellow villager," Hu Ruoyun replied.
But the leader wouldn't let it go. "Her gaze towards you is quite complicated, isn't it?"
Hu Ruoyun awkwardly smiled. "Come on, boss, don't say such things. She's just someone I went on a blind date with back in high school. She recently broke up and came to me for some comfort."
The others clearly didn't believe him. Cui Shuigen bluntly said, "Brother San, we all care about you. Sister Mona is a good person, devoted to you. You can't be a 'Chen Shimei'!"
Hu Ruoyun had no choice but to bring out his trump card. "Mao Na knows her too; she understands our situation. There's nothing between us."
The group remained skeptical.
That night, unable to resist, Hu Ruoyun called Mao Na in the dormitory to report on the day's events, omitting the part about being embraced at the bus stop and what Zhang Meina said about being with that guy.
Mao Na was surprisingly nonchalant. "Didn't you comfort her at all?"
Hu Ruoyun glanced around at the four pairs of eyes in the room. "Forget it; what could I say? The brothers here have been interrogating me for ages..."
Upon hearing Hu Ruoyun's account, Mao Na burst into laughter on the other end of the line. "Got it! I'll let everyone know that the 'organization' is still quite reassured about you... When can I come over to treat everyone to a meal?"
