But the feelings that had been growing deep within him had long surpassed the boundaries of mere roommates. Every time Nezha saw Ao Bing smile, every time he walked alongside him, and every time he listened to him play the piano, an inexplicable flutter surged in his heart. Yet tonight, seeing Ao Bing and Lin Yuqing chatting happily together transformed that feeling into a piercing ache that he could not ignore.
"Could it be that I really..." Nezha paused, a truth he had long dared not confront surfacing in his mind, "have feelings for him?"
This thought struck him like a bolt of lightning, illuminating the vague emotions that had been swirling within him. Those moments of anticipation spent with Ao Bing, the fluttering heart caused by a glance or a word from him, the efforts made just to show Ao Bing his best side... all pointed to an undeniable fact—he liked Ao Bing, not merely as a friend, but with a deeper, indescribable affection.
"But..." Nezha ran his fingers through his hair in distress. "What about Ao Bing? What would he think? If he knew how I felt, would he find it disgusting? Would he distance himself from me?"
These questions filled Nezha with an unprecedented sense of unease and fear. Ao Bing was far too important to him; he could not risk damaging the hard-won friendship they shared.
More importantly, having just seen Ao Bing interacting with Lin Yuqing, Nezha couldn't help but question Ao Bing's orientation. Lin Yuqing was smart, talented, and beautiful—a rare gem among girls. If Ao Bing had feelings for her, then what hope did Nezha have for his own feelings?
"Ha, how ridiculous," Nezha chuckled bitterly to himself. "Here I am worrying about this. How could someone as outstanding as Ao Bing possibly like someone like me, a Problem Student?"
Although Nezha's image had improved significantly lately, deep down he still often doubted his own worth. To him, Ao Bing was like the moon in the sky while he was merely a speck of dust on the ground—too far apart to ever be together.
His thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of his phone. He pulled it out to see that it was a call from Ao Bing.
"Hello?" Nezha answered the phone, trying hard to make his voice sound normal.
"Where have you been?" Ao Bing's voice carried a clear note of concern. "The music festival has ended; I’ve been waiting for you at the auditorium entrance but didn’t see you."
"Ah, sorry," Nezha stammered. "I felt a bit dizzy earlier and stepped out for some fresh air."
"Are you okay?" Ao Bing asked with concern. "Do you want to go to the infirmary?"
"I'm fine, really," Nezha replied hesitantly. "You should head back to your dorm. I want to walk around a bit more."
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line, and Ao Bing seemed to sense something was off. "Nezha, are you sure you're alright? Your voice doesn't sound right."
"I'm really fine," Nezha insisted. "I might just be a little tired. Don't worry about me; just enjoy your night at the music festival!"
"The music festival is over," Ao Bing said calmly. "I'm at North Gate right now. Where are you? I'll come find you."
Nezha sighed, realizing he couldn't hide anything from Ao Bing. "I'm over by Central Lake."
"Wait for me," Ao Bing said briefly before hanging up.
Nezha stood by the lakeside, gazing at the calm surface reflecting the starry sky, yet his heart was filled with unease. He didn't know how to face Ao Bing, nor did he know how to handle the sudden feelings that had emerged within him.
