Ao Bing fell silent for a moment, a flicker of struggle crossing his eyes before he finally spoke. "My father wants me to give up my studies and return to the Dragon Palace immediately to take over the family business."
"What?" Nezha exclaimed, his eyes widening in surprise. "That's so sudden! You're only in your second year; you still have over two years until graduation!"
Ao Bing let out a bitter laugh. "To the Dragon Tribe, human schools are merely a way to 'experience life,' not truly necessary education."
Nezha frowned in thought. Although Ao Bing had mentioned before that he was from the Dragon Tribe, he had never gone into detail about his family and background. It seemed that Ao Bing's identity was far more complex than he had imagined.
"Don't you want to go back?" Nezha asked tentatively.
Ao Bing looked out the window, a complex emotion reflected in his gaze. "It's not a matter of wanting or not wanting; it's about responsibility. As the prince of the Dragon Tribe, I bear the mission of revitalizing my family. This is an unavoidable fate."
"Prince?" Nezha repeated in astonishment. "You’re... the son of the Dragon King?"
Ao Bing nodded, finally turning to face Nezha directly. "It's time I told you the whole truth, Nezha. I am not just a member of the Dragon Tribe; I am the prince of the Dragon Tribe, the future Dragon King. My father, Ao Guang, is the East Sea Dragon King, ruling over the waters of the East Sea and countless aquatic beings."
Nezha gasped in shock. Although he had long known about Ao Bing's special status, the title of "the Dragon Prince" still left him stunned. No wonder Ao Bing always seemed so calm and composed; he was born with such significant responsibilities.
"So... the Dragon Palace really exists? It's not just a myth?" Nezha asked curiously.
Ao Bing smiled slightly. "The Dragon Palace does exist, but it’s not located at the bottom of the sea as described in myths. In modern society, everything is changing, including the lifestyle of the Dragon Tribe. Today's 'Dragon Palace' resembles a vast commercial empire, involving fisheries, shipping, marine resource development, and more. The responsibilities of the Dragon King have shifted from merely overseeing aquatic beings to managing this commercial empire and balancing the interests of humans and aquatic creatures."
Nezha nodded thoughtfully. "So your father wants you to return and take over this 'commercial empire'?"
"Yes," Ao Bing sighed, "for centuries, the power of the Dragon Tribe has been steadily declining. With the advancement of human technology and the over-exploitation of natural resources, the Ocean Ecology has been severely damaged, leading to a significant weakening of the Dragon Tribe's strength and influence. My father hopes that I can lead the Dragon Tribe to adapt to this new era and find a way to coexist with humanity."
Nezha listened intently, suddenly realizing how heavy the burden on Ao Bing's shoulders was. He not only had to face his own future and dreams but also had to consider the survival of the entire Dragon Tribe. This sense of responsibility far exceeded what an ordinary person could comprehend.
"What about you?" Nezha asked softly, "What do you want?"
Ao Bing paused for a moment, as if he had never seriously contemplated this question. "What do I want..." he murmured, then let out a bitter laugh. "From childhood, my life has been clearly mapped out for me. As the Dragon Prince, I must undergo the strictest education, learning various skills such as water management, governance, diplomacy, and strategy to prepare for inheriting the throne of the Dragon King. My personal desires are insignificant in comparison to family interests."
