In the second week, an unexpected visitor arrived at the school—Shen Gongbao. After class, he sought out Nezha to inquire about Ao Bing's whereabouts.
“Ao Bing has returned to the Dragon Palace for some kind of Inheritance Ceremony,” Nezha replied cautiously, unsure of how much detail he should share with Shen Gongbao.
Shen Gongbao nodded thoughtfully. “Inheritance Ceremony... It seems the transition within the Dragon Tribe has begun.” He cast a meaningful glance at Nezha. “Do you understand what this means?”
Nezha shook his head. “Ao Bing only said he would be gone for a month and then return to continue his studies.”
Shen Gongbao chuckled lightly. “Matters of the Dragon Tribe are never that simple. The Inheritance Ceremony is not just a formality; it is a transfer of power and responsibility. Once the ceremony is completed, Ao Bing will officially become the heir of the Dragon Tribe, bearing greater responsibilities. This responsibility... might prevent him from returning to the Human World.”
Nezha's heart sank. “Are you saying... Ao Bing might not come back?”
“It depends on many factors,” Shen Gongbao said slowly, “including the Dragon King's attitude, the needs of the Dragon Tribe, and... Ao Bing's own choices.”
Nezha clenched his fists. “Ao Bing promised he would return; I believe in him.”
Shen Gongbao looked at Nezha with a knowing expression. “I hope so. However, you need to understand one thing: the Dragon Tribe and humans are always two different worlds. As the Dragon Prince, Ao Bing will eventually have to return to his rightful world. And you, as a human, will ultimately be unable to follow him into that world.”
These words fell like cold water, extinguishing the flame of hope in Nezha's heart. He had never been so acutely aware of the chasm between himself and Ao Bing—not just in terms of personality and background but also in species and lifespan. The life of the Dragon Tribe was long enough to be considered eternal, while a human life spanned only a few decades. This disparity rendered any form of lasting relationship unrealistic.
“I don’t care about that,” Nezha said defiantly. “Ao Bing is Ao Bing; whether he is from the Dragon Tribe or human, it doesn’t change my feelings for him...” He suddenly stopped, realizing he had almost revealed that hidden word buried deep within his heart.
Shen Gongbao observed Nezha’s expression and smiled slightly. “It seems you have come to understand your own feelings. But the question is, does Ao Bing feel the same? As the Dragon Prince, his marriage may have already been arranged to solidify the rule and interests of the Dragon Tribe.”
The possibility made Nezha feel a pang of heartache. Ao Bing had never mentioned anything about marriage or partners, but considering his identity and responsibilities, a political marriage was indeed a possibility.
"Regardless, I will wait for him to return," Nezha said firmly. "As for everything else, we can discuss it when the time comes."
Shen Gongbao looked deeply at Nezha, as if wanting to say something, but ultimately just nodded and turned to leave.
By the third week, various speculations about Ao Bing began circulating in school. Some said he had to take a leave of absence due to sudden issues with the family business; others claimed he had been accepted into a top university abroad; and there were even rumors that he was actually the heir of a secretive wealthy family, called back to handle affairs. No one knew the truth, and Nezha had no intention of clarifying anything.
Ao Bing's absence even prompted inquiries from Lin Yuqing. Since that night at the music festival, Lin Yuqing had often invited Ao Bing to music events, and they had established a certain friendship.
"Where has Ao Bing gone?" Lin Yuqing asked with concern. "He promised to attend next week's chamber music concert."
Nezha simply explained that Ao Bing had to leave school for family matters but did not reveal too many details. He noticed that when Lin Yuqing mentioned Ao Bing, there was a special glimmer in her eyes, which made him recall Shen Gongbao's words—perhaps Ao Bing already had other arrangements.
