After Ao Bing left, the days felt like an endless torment for Nezha. Although he tried to keep himself busy—attending classes, training, and preparing for his coaching certification exam—the emptiness within him could not be filled. Every night, when he returned to the dormitory and faced Ao Bing's empty bed and desk, the feelings of longing and loneliness surged over him like a tidal wave, nearly suffocating him.
Time passed day by day, and before long, winter quietly arrived. The trees on campus shed their autumn gold, leaving only bare branches swaying in the wind. The north wind howled, its chill penetrating to the bone, yet it was nothing compared to the coldness in Nezha's heart.
That morning, Nezha woke up unusually early. He had dreamt of Ao Bing—dreaming that Ao Bing stood in the majestic Dragon Palace wearing a Dragon Robe, smiling and waving at him. When he awoke, the warmth of the dream lingered in his heart, but it was soon replaced by the coldness of reality.
After washing up, Nezha headed downstairs to prepare for morning practice on the playground. As he reached the first-floor lobby, he saw Aunt Taiyi from the Dormitory Office mopping the floor. Even though it was early winter, Aunt Taiyi still wore her colorful work uniform, looking particularly spirited.
"Wow, little Nezha is up so early!" Aunt Taiyi looked up and greeted him with a smile. "Going for a run on the playground? It’s so cold outside; make sure to dress warmly!"
Nezha nodded and forced a smile. "Thank you for your concern, Aunt Taiyi. I'm dressed pretty warmly."
Aunt Taiyi set down her mop and scrutinized Nezha closely. A flicker of understanding crossed her eyes. "Young man, you don’t seem very spirited lately. Is something bothering you?"
Nezha was taken aback; he hadn’t realized his emotions were so obvious. He shook his head, trying to cover it up. "No... nothing really. I’ve just been tired from training and haven’t rested well."
"It’s because Ao Bing left, isn’t it?" Aunt Taiyi said directly, her gaze filled with understanding and sympathy. "I could see how close you two were; his sudden departure must be hard on you."
Nezha's heart skipped a beat at the mention of Ao Bing. He didn’t know how to respond and could only nod silently.
"Ah, young people," Aunt Taiyi sighed. "Some connections come quickly and leave just as fast. But true bonds will eventually reunite, no matter how long the separation lasts."
Nezha looked at Aunt Taiyi in surprise. Her words sounded unlike what one would expect from someone in the Dormitory Office; they carried a wisdom and insight beyond her years.
"Aunt Taiyi," Nezha hesitated, unsure of how to express his confusion.
Aunt Taiyi smiled mysteriously. "I've lived a long life and seen much; naturally, I understand some things. Little Nezha, come by my office sometime. I want to talk to you about Ao Bing."
With that, Aunt Taiyi picked up a bucket and hummed a little tune as she walked toward the storage room, leaving Nezha standing there, filled with questions.
Why did Aunt Taiyi mention Ao Bing? What did she know? With these thoughts swirling in his mind, Nezha absentmindedly completed his morning exercises and headed straight for the Dormitory Office.
As he pushed open the office door, a rich aroma of herbal tea greeted him. Aunt Taiyi was sitting at a small table by the window, brewing tea. Upon seeing Nezha enter, she warmly called out, "You're here! Come, come, try the tea I just made—Passion Fruit Tea. It's especially effective for easing homesickness!"
Nezha awkwardly stepped into the office and accepted the teacup Aunt Taiyi handed him. The tea was clear and bright, its fragrance delightful, instantly lifting his spirits.
