"Where is he from?" Huang Lin's mother continued to inquire.
"Well, since he's my childhood friend, he's from Southeast Province, Qingcheng City," Wang Shun Yuan answered truthfully.
"I've never heard of that place. But I really didn't expect him to know a CEO in the capital. I wonder who this CEO is? Shun Yuan, since you have such an impressive friend, why didn't you mention it earlier?" Huang Lin's mother said excitedly.
"Mom, Jiang Chen is just Shun Yuan's friend; we can't trouble him. It's already a lot to ask of him this time, and about those gifts—please don't think about them. We absolutely cannot accept them," Huang Lin reiterated to her mother since she had already brought up the gifts several times in their room.
After all, people from rural areas in the capital had never seen such expensive items.
"Why can't we accept them? For others, these gifts might be nothing more than a drop in the bucket, but for us, they could be something we could never earn in a lifetime. Besides, wealthy people are different; if you refuse their gifts, they might think you're being rude. You definitely have to accept them," Huang Lin's mother insisted.
Her words did make sense.
"Mom, I’m not discussing this with you anymore," Huang Lin replied helplessly.
"Until we meet Jiang Chen’s friend, we shouldn't jump to conclusions. I just feel like something is off. That kid Jiang Chen wouldn’t be putting on an act, would he?" Chen Renjing still found it hard to believe that Jiang Chen had such a background.
"Putting on an act? Chen Renjing, how could that be? There's no need for it at all. Besides, putting on an act would cost too much. The key point is—why would Jiang Chen act? He’s just Shun Yuan’s friend," Huang Lin said.
"For showing off! You don’t understand; some people will do anything for face and to show off," Chen Renjing said seriously.
"Jiang Chen isn’t that boring; you’re overthinking it." Feeling frustrated by Chen Renjing’s constant jabs at Jiang Chen and himself, Wang Shun Yuan spoke up in a low voice.
"Heh, whether I’m overthinking or not will be clear soon enough. I really can’t believe a CEO would treat this kid so courteously," Chen Renjing sneered.
Jiang Chen was stealing the spotlight today in a way that made it hard for Chen Renjing to accept. After all, during lunch earlier that day, Jiang Chen had been quiet and hardly noticeable; now his presence was overwhelming her completely—something she couldn’t come to terms with.
