In one corner of the yard, there was a stone house built against the wall. Pushing open the door and taking a glance inside, it seemed to be a washroom. Returning to the main house, Mo Wen pushed the door open and stepped inside. The interior consisted of three rooms: the central hall and two rooms on either side. Looking at this small courtyard, Mo Wen couldn't help but recall the little wooden house he shared with Old Lu. Aside from the pavilion and stone table in the yard, the layout was strikingly similar, evoking a sense of familiarity.
However, at that moment, Mo Wen felt that something was off about this village. There were no sounds of children playing, nor could he see any of them around. Instead, faint cries from women and lamentations from men echoed from some courtyards. Mo Wen refrained from probing further with his senses to uncover what was happening; although he was stronger than Erniu, the most powerful in the village, it felt disrespectful to intrude in someone else's territory. He decided that as long as he remained in the village, he would eventually learn what was going on. He lay down on the bed, having not done so in a long time; he had almost forgotten what it felt like. Before long, he drifted off to sleep, only to be stirred by Erniu's voice from outside.
"Er Gou Brother, are you there?"
"Oh, it's Brother Erniu! Please come in." Stepping out of the house, he saw Erniu standing in the yard, looking haggard and troubled.
"Er Gou Brother, I apologize for my neglect," Erniu said as they sat down at the stone table in the pavilion.
"Brother Erniu, there's no need for such words. With matters in the village at hand, you being the highest realm in the village should attend to them. I'm fine here; there's no question of neglect," Mo Wen replied.
"You truly are an open-minded person; it seems I am being overly sensitive as an older brother."
"Brother Erniu has come; does that mean matters in the village have been resolved?"
"Ah, I won't hide it from you; there is completely no clue. Sigh!" As Mo Wen asked about village affairs, Erniu's brow furrowed even deeper.
"Brother Erniu, if that's the case, this matter seems quite troublesome."
"Sigh! I won't beat around the bush with you any longer. I came here specifically for this matter and hope you can assist me." With that, Erniu bowed deeply.
"Brother Erniu, what are you doing? If I can help in any way, please just say so. Such grand gestures are too much for me," Mo Wen quickly supported Erniu.
"Alright then, I'll speak plainly with you. If you discover anything, please help your brother out. The story begins five days ago..." Five days ago, inexplicably, the tamed birds in the village began to die off. Two days later, children started showing signs of dementia. The village attempted some measures but to no avail. Just a day ago, some children fell into a coma and today some villagers began experiencing dizziness. The village healer couldn't identify any issues either; although the elders were knowledgeable and experienced, they were at a loss regarding this matter. They could only wait for the hunting party to return. Earlier today, Erniu checked on those children and found their Shen Hun diminishing; he suspected it was caused by a Chimera. However, after searching around the village thoroughly, no trace of a Chimera was found. The magic circle remained intact as well; none of the children had left the village. Kao Shu Village was located closest to Cloud Mist Forest within hundreds of Bird Journeys around here. Therefore, significant resources had been invested to establish their current defense system. The magic circle they were using wasn't provided by an official family but was instead set up by hiring someone at great expense—far superior to what an official family would offer—making it nearly impossible for an ordinary Chimera to breach it. Even if a powerful Chimera attacked the village, it wouldn't go unnoticed like this.
