"From your accent, you don't seem to be from the capital; you must be from the south, right? Is it from the Suzhou and Zhejiang area?" Wu Xiangli continued to ask.
"I'm from Nancang City in Southeast Province," Jiang Chen replied.
"I'm from Hubei Province, so we're kind of half fellow townsfolk," Wu Xiangli said with a smile, gradually relaxing and no longer feeling awkward. Hubei and Southeast Province are somewhat adjacent, so she considered it a connection!
Jiang Chen casually responded a few times. This was Wu Xiangli's first time attending such a grand entertainment industry party. As a minor character, she felt quite uneasy. Finding someone like Jiang Chen to chat with helped ease her embarrassment and anxiety, so she became more animated in their conversation.
She didn't even notice a middle-aged woman approaching her with a dark expression.
"Xiangli, what are you doing? I didn't bring you here to chat aimlessly with unrelated people," the middle-aged woman said with a stern tone as soon as she arrived.
Hearing the woman's voice, Wu Xiangli instinctively stood up, her face flustered. The woman was her manager, Liang Wan, whom she referred to as Sister Liang.
There are many managers in the entertainment industry, but few have the credentials of Lin Bingbing's manager, aunt Zheng. Sister Liang specializes in guiding newcomers and has several under her wing, with Wu Xiangli being one of them.
This time at the party, the company specifically gave these newcomers an opportunity. Whether they could meet influential figures depended on their social skills. The other newcomers managed by Sister Liang were performing well, engaging with industry bigwigs or Capital Young Masters and even exchanging WeChat contacts. However, Wu Xiangli had wandered off to the lounge area for casual conversation.
Having been in the industry for many years, Sister Liang prided herself on her keen eye. From a distance, she spotted Jiang Chen and immediately dismissed him.
Jiang Chen's appearance did not resemble that of a wealthy heir at all; who would attend such a high-end party dressed in casual clothes and sneakers?
Thinking Jiang Chen was not someone important, Sister Liang believed that Wu Xiangli chatting with him was a waste of time.
"Sister Liang, I was just talking to Mr. Jiang; he's really nice..." Wu Xiangli began to explain but was interrupted mid-sentence.
"Look at his appearance; it's obvious he's nobody. Talking to him only lowers your status. Remember, you are a star; you must always be aware of your identity," Sister Liang admonished sternly.
Jiang Chen sat on the sofa, casually observing with an indifferent expression.
Seeing Jiang Chen looking at her, Sister Liang's demeanor grew colder. She was convinced that Jiang Chen was just someone who had snuck in to eat and drink.
"What are you looking at? Don't think about getting Xiangli's attention. She's young and doesn't understand the ways of the world; she's innocent, but I'm not. If you want to catch her eye, you'll have to get through me first," Sister Liang warned Jiang Chen in a heavy tone.
"Sister Liang, it was my idea to approach Mr. Jiang," Wu Xiangli quickly explained, feeling uneasy about the misunderstanding regarding Jiang Chen.
Newcomers in the entertainment industry often maintain some innocence; Wu Xiangli was no exception. If she encountered this situation again in a few years, it would likely be a different story.
Sister Liang's expression instantly turned cold as she glared at Wu Xiangli.
Wu Xiangli felt intimidated and fell silent.
"You really have no sense at all. Today I'm going to teach you how to observe someone," Sister Liang said before scrutinizing Jiang Chen.
"Take this kid as an example. Just because he appears in this setting doesn't mean he is a celebrity or a wealthy person. It's the same with you; your presence here doesn't necessarily mean you are a true superstar."
