As Shen Tong's words hung in the air, the other three turned to her in unison, their faces reflecting confusion.
"I found something unusual about the 'Controlling Qi' on those Paper Men," Shen Tong explained patiently. "The runes are extremely peculiar, far beyond ordinary talismans. I suspect that the Gui Xu Society has another motive for excavating the ancient tomb; they are likely searching for some kind of treasure or lost texts that could enhance their ability to control others..."
"What should we do now?" Xiaoshuang asked nervously, wringing her fingers. "Should we report this to the higher-ups at the Police Station immediately?"
Lin Mingchang shook his head with a wry smile. "I’m afraid it won’t help. I’ve tried multiple times to report cases related to the Gui Xu Society to my superiors, but each time it was shelved or blocked. I’m increasingly convinced that there are people from the Gui Xu Society within the Spring City Police Station."
Fang Zigui listened quietly, resting his chin on one hand as he pondered. "So now, we urgently need to clarify two questions: First, when does the Gui Xu Society plan to start excavating the ancient tomb? Second, what exactly is hidden in that tomb that so attracts them?"
"Fu Yuan Zhai," Shen Tong suddenly said. "Fu Yuan Zhai must be key to unraveling this mystery. That shopkeeper Hong is definitely part of the Gui Xu Society; he creates those special Paper Men solely to help them control the people they need. We should start our investigation there."
"Shen Tong is absolutely right!" Lin Mingchang clapped his hands together decisively and continued, "But it’s not just Fu Yuan Zhai; there's also Hongtu Industrial. My plan is to execute a Double-Line Raid!"
Xiaoshuang's eyes widened in surprise as she looked at Lin Mingchang incredulously. "A Double-Line Raid? Just... just the four of us?"
"Of course not!" Lin Mingchang replied. "I have a few trustworthy colleagues at the Police Station, and I’ve also contacted my old classmate Li Zheng from the North City Patrol team; he’s willing to assist us privately. We’ll split into two teams—I'll take a few reliable guys from the Police Station along with Xiaoshuang to raid Hongtu Industrial. Xiaoshuang will need to take photos of any documents and evidence on-site. Shen Tong and Zigui, you two will coordinate with Li Zheng’s patrol team to hit Fu Yuan Zhai. Be careful; safety comes first!"
After detailed planning, the Double-Line Raid led by Lin Mingchang and Li Zheng commenced simultaneously the following night.
Lin Mingchang's team stormed into Hongtu Industrial's office, a Brick-and-Tile Cottage. He kicked open the door, followed by four officers and Xiaoshuang, each armed with a flashlight.
"Split up! Zhao, take one person and check the second floor; Xiao Zhou, you two go to the left office while Xiaoshuang and I check the right side," Lin Mingchang ordered in a hushed tone before turning to Xiaoshuang. "Stay close and be careful not to get separated."
Xiaoshuang nodded and followed closely behind Lin Mingchang, her heart racing with anxiety.
As they passed through the foyer, Lin Mingchang pushed open a heavy wooden door marked "General Manager's Office."
Immediately, a pungent smell of burnt material assaulted them.
The office was empty; old walnut filing cabinets had been cleared out completely, drawers left wide open, and a fire pit in one corner was filled with ashes from burned papers.
"This is bad!" Lin Mingchang cursed softly. "We’re too late!"
Xiaoshuang approached the corner and bent down to inspect the ashes in the iron basin. "Brother Lin, these ashes are still warm; they must have been burned recently."
The returning officers brought back similar reports—Hongtu Industrial had been thoroughly emptied; all documents had either been taken away or incinerated.
Lin Mingchang refused to give up; he crouched by the fire pit and carefully sifted through the charred remnants of paper with a pencil.
Though most documents had turned to ash, at the very bottom, Lin Mingchang discovered two pieces of paper that were not completely burned.
"I found something!" he exclaimed as he carefully retrieved those two sheets of paper.
Xiaoshuang quickly stepped forward, using her flashlight to help Lin Mingchang increase the illumination.
