I found myself transported into a book, becoming Liu Laolao from "Dream of the Red Chamber," an ordinary and impoverished peasant woman. After crossing over, I was astonished to discover that my daughter in the story bore an uncanny resemblance to my daughter in reality, filling my heart with joy.
However, good fortune was short-lived. Soon, our family fell into a tragic situation, suffering greatly at the hands of the Jia Manor. My daughter, Su'er, and son-in-law, Wang Gou'er, both held positions at Rongguo Mansion, which we thought was a fortunate arrangement. Our neighbors regarded us with newfound respect.
Unexpectedly, one night, a drunken master from the estate returned home and forcibly took my Su'er. Despite her struggles and resistance, she was beaten to death. Wang Gou'er attempted to save his wife but was left crippled and cast out from the manor.
The loss of my beloved daughter left me heartbroken. Yet, we were merely poor country folk; how could we possibly contend with the powerful Jia Manor? I could only bury this deep-seated hatred within me.
However, fate had not abandoned me entirely. A mysterious figure who appeared either wealthy or noble approached me. He informed me that the Jia Manor had committed numerous atrocities and that the court intended to investigate them. He asked if I would be willing to infiltrate Rongguo Mansion to gather evidence of their corruption.
Of course, I was willing! This was my only chance to seek justice for my daughter. Thus began my perilous journey of revenge.
As autumn waned and winter approached, the chill grew stronger. I brought my grandson Ban'er from the countryside to the city, where everything felt different. The streets were lined with shops and bustling with people; Ban'er was so mesmerized that I had to pull him along as we made our way to Rong Ning Street.
Though Rong Ning Street was quite bright and spacious, it saw few pedestrians. At the end of the street stood a tall vermilion gate. A pair of imposing stone lions guarded it, and the guards exuded an air of authority that instilled fear.
Daring not to approach recklessly, I lingered near a side gate to observe. After a while, I noticed an older guard who seemed somewhat amiable. With a smile, I walked over and politely inquired about the whereabouts of Zhourui Jiadi.
Though the old guard was not particularly warm, he did not make things difficult for us and pointed in a direction: "Go inside, past the covered walkway; when you see a small courtyard, turn left and go further in."
I bowed repeatedly in thanks and followed his directions. Sure enough, I found Zhourui Jiadi in the small courtyard. She wore a deep blue cloth garment with subtle floral patterns at the collar and cuffs—unassuming yet exuding a sense of cleanliness and sharpness.
Even if one has never read "Dream of the Red Chamber," just by looking at her attire, it is clear that she holds a respectable position in the household. Zhourui Jiadi wore a perfectly measured smile, neither flattering nor cold.
She recognized me after just a moment, showing a hint of surprise before saying, "Isn't this Liu Laolao? What brings you here today?"
I felt a surge of joy; just as described in the book, she remembered me. I forced a smile and replied, "I came specifically to see you, Sister, and also to inquire about Aunt Gu. If you could introduce me to her, that would be wonderful; if not, I would appreciate it if you could convey my regards."
Zhourui Jiadi was indeed perceptive and immediately picked up the conversation: "Don’t worry, Grandma. With such sincerity from afar, how could I not arrange for you to meet the true Buddha? However, nowadays, the lady of the house hardly manages affairs; it’s all handled by Second Mistress Lian. Do you know who Second Mistress Lian is? She is the lady's niece, the daughter of the late uncle, with the given name Xi Feng."
