I lowered my head and moved to the stool by the kang, only to hear Wang Xifeng say, "Relatives don’t visit much anymore; we’ve grown distant. Between relatives, there should be some consideration without waiting for a visit." 0

I quickly smiled and replied, "Not at all, it’s our lack of manners that has troubled you, dear aunt." 0

Fengjie waved her hand and sighed, "Don’t be fooled by the bustling appearance of Rongguo Mansion; there are great difficulties behind it that others may not believe if told." 0

I knew this was her excuse and that she wasn’t here for money. Yet, Wang Xifeng's depth was truly hard to gauge. It was only upon meeting her that I realized she was even more meticulous and considerate than described in the books. 0

As I pondered how to respond, Wang Xifeng continued, "Since you’ve come such a long way today and it’s our first meeting, how can I let you leave empty-handed? Coincidentally, I received twenty taels of silver from the lady yesterday for the girls’ clothing, which I haven’t used yet. If you don’t mind it being a small amount, please take it for now." 0

Upon hearing this, I realized she intended to send me off. I had hoped to take the opportunity to explore Jia Manor further and understand the layout better. So I quickly nodded repeatedly and said, "Oh no, that won’t do. Second Mistress Lian, you truly have a kind heart. My old lady came all this way just to pay respects to the Second Mistress and the lady. Second Mistress, could you possibly have someone lead me to pay my respects?" 0

Wang Xifeng shot me a half-smile and replied, "Never mind; the lady hasn’t been feeling well lately and doesn’t see anyone unless there’s something important. We appreciate your old lady’s intentions and will convey them later." As she spoke, she gave a knowing glance to Lady Ping'er. 0

Lady Ping'er immediately handed over twenty taels of silver along with a few coins. I realized that insisting on seeing the lady might raise suspicions. 0

I could only accept it with repeated thanks: "Thank you very much, Second Mistress. Thank you." 0

When I looked up at Wang Xifeng again, I suddenly met her gaze and saw a glimmer of inscrutable amusement in her eyes. My heart tightened, and I hurriedly lowered my head. 0

"Old In-Law, it’s getting late, and the journey home is long; I won’t keep you," Wang Xifeng said with a smile. "Come visit again another day." 0

I quickly agreed and turned back for one last look before leaving. There sat Wang Xifeng as before, a faint smile on her face that was difficult to decipher. 0

Once outside Rongguo Mansion, I let out a long breath and felt somewhat relieved. Although I hadn’t managed to gather more information this time, I had at least made some progress. 0

At the very least, I had successfully connected with Zhou Rui Jiadi and Wang Xifeng and received a reward from Jia Manor; this would give me a reason to return in thanks. 0

Thinking of this, I clutched the silver tightly in my arms, feeling a tumultuous wave of emotions inside me. According to what Wang Xifeng said, this twenty taels was merely for making clothes for the girls? 0

Haha… This amount of money could sustain our poor family for an entire year! 0

Thinking of my poor Su'er being beaten to death without even a penny in compensation, I couldn't help but clench my teeth, a surge of overwhelming hatred rising within me. 0

Wang Xifeng sat upright on the couch, playing with a delicate Jade Ruyi in her hand. She recalled her recent meeting with Liu Laolao, and her brows furrowed slightly. That old woman from the countryside, though dressed in rags and behaving coarsely, had an inexplicable oddity about her. 0

"Ping'er," Wang Xifeng called, "did you notice the look in Liu Laolao's eyes?" 0

Ping'er handed her a cup of tea, pondering for a moment before softly replying, "Though Liu Laolao is a country woman, her words seemed rather deliberate, and there appeared to be something hidden in her gaze. I also found it somewhat suspicious." 0

Wang Xifeng nodded. "You should discreetly investigate Liu Laolao's background and see where she truly comes from." 0

"Yes, ma'am," Ping'er responded before quietly leaving the room. 0

The room fell silent once more as Wang Xifeng reached for an account book and began to flip through its pages. Her fingertips lightly brushed over the rows of numbers, yet unease stirred within her. With a soft sigh, she closed the account book and gazed out the window, where a Crabapple Blossom was blooming splendidly in the courtyard. 0
