I Spent a Million on a Haunted House

After years of hard work and saving, I finally bought this million-dollar house.
I thought it would mark the beginning of a happy life, but who would have thought that just a few days after moving in, my nightmare began.
In the middle of the night, I often heard the sounds of children crying and laughing as if they were playing, which left me unable to sleep well for several days.
I spoke to the neighbors above and below me. The couple downstairs were elderly and did not live with their children or grandchildren.
The neighbors upstairs had a child, but he was already in high school, studying late into the night. After talking with them, I found out they hadn’t heard any sounds of children crying or laughing.
I reached out to all the surrounding neighbors, but no one else reported hearing a child crying at night. It was strange; I was the only one who could hear it, and I was certain that the sounds were not just in my head.
Suddenly, a thought struck me, sending a chill down my spine.
No, it couldn’t be what I was thinking; there must be another explanation.
That night, the lights in my room suddenly began to buzz and flicker erratically.
I turned my head slowly, and what I saw made my blood run cold: dark red stains were seeping out from the floorboards, appearing particularly eerie under the dim light.
Suddenly, I caught a glimpse of a shadowy figure flash by. Before I could recover from this horrifying sight, the bloodstains instantly dried up and vanished as if everything had been just an illusion.
I curled up in the corner of the wall, wide-eyed and frozen in place, too scared to move.
The Jade Pendant around my neck emitted a faint warmth that kept me from fainting out of fear.
It’s embarrassing to admit, but I’m actually a Celestial Master, albeit an inexperienced one; the reason being that I’m afraid of ghosts.
I possess the Heavenly Eye, which allows me to see spirits. As a child, I had fainted countless times from being scared by them, and eventually, my grandmother sealed my Heavenly Eye.
Of course, normal people generally cannot see ghosts; they can stay in a house for as long as they want without any issues.
But my constitution is special; being in this house for a few days must have disturbed the seal due to its heavy yin energy.
I endured the night in fear until dawn broke.
The next day, I woke up with heavy dark circles under my eyes, my heart boiling with anger.
After spending so much of my savings, I had unknowingly bought a haunted house! I had to confront the Original Owner and the Agent for an explanation.
I arrived at the Original Owner's doorstep and knocked forcefully on the door. When it opened, the Original Owner looked at me with impatience.
Suppressing my inner rage, I tried to keep my voice steady as I said, "The house you sold me is haunted. You need to give me a reasonable explanation."
Upon hearing this, the Original Owner sneered and coldly retorted, "Don’t talk nonsense. Everything was normal when I lived there. How did it become a haunted house when it got to you? Don’t go looking for trouble."
His attitude infuriated me, but I felt powerless. I could only turn and head to the Agent's office.
When I arrived at the Agent's office, the Agent crossed his arms and shouted, "The contract is signed, the money is paid. It’s settled. Don’t cause a scene here."
This was unacceptable. The ghost in that house must have died not long ago because ghosts that have been dead for over two months have already returned to the underworld.
The Original Owner's family had claimed they lived there for seven or eight years. Someone must have died in that house.
In desperation, I thought of my best friend, Su Yao.
Su Yao knew about my identity as a Celestial Master, and she was bold and a lawyer; I had to seek her help.
I quickly dialed Su Yao's number. As soon as she picked up, she could hear the urgency and fear in my voice. Without hesitation, she put everything down and rushed over.
When Su Yao arrived at my home, we sat down on the sofa.
I recounted the terrifying experience from last night in detail.
Her face turned pale instantly as she grasped my hand tightly and comforted me, saying, "Don’t be afraid. With me here, we will definitely uncover the truth."
We got up and began searching the room for clues.
After a flurry of activity, we found nothing. The previous homeowner had cleaned the house thoroughly, leaving no trace behind.
I anxiously said to Su Yao, "This previous homeowner is too cautious; there's not a single clue left. What are we going to do?"
Su Yao calmly replied, "Don't panic. What did the ghost you saw at night look like? Was it male or female?"
I thought for a moment and said, "I couldn't tell if it was male or female, but it was very short—probably a child around five or six years old."
As I spoke, my expression changed. "I just remembered that when I bought this house, the previous homeowner seemed reluctant to sell, but his mother, Grandma Li, appeared very eager to sell. She told me that if I bought the house, all the furniture in the living room would be included. The previous homeowner immediately objected, and then Grandma Li lay down on the floor, saying it was all my fault for losing the child and that I should just die here instead. After that, the previous homeowner agreed."
Su Yao's face grew serious. "Why didn't you tell me about this? I remember you mentioned that the price of this house was much lower than market value and that the previous homeowner insisted on full payment."
I felt a bit embarrassed. "Well, you were busy with work at the time, so I thought I'd wait until you got back to discuss it. And then I just kept waiting until now."
Su Yao shot me an annoyed glance and boldly speculated, "So this little ghost could possibly be the previous homeowner's child?"
My heart skipped a beat. "Doesn't that mean the child went missing?"
We exchanged glances and decided to start our investigation by talking to the neighbors about the situation of the previous homeowner's family.
