"Brother Yin, please speak. I am all ears," Mo Wen said, relieved to see that Yin Gongzi was not fixated on his false identity as a scholar.
"As Brother Wen has guessed, I am indeed the one who set the topics for this Poetry Gathering. For many years, I have been troubled by this matter, which has hindered my progress in cultivation for a century," Yin Gongzi replied, a bitter expression crossing his face as he recounted his past.
He hailed from an illustrious lineage; his ancestors were prominent figures in the Lianyun Empire. His family had maintained their esteemed status through generations, achieving significant accomplishments that upheld their reputation. In his father's generation, several uncles held positions in the court, and his father was no exception. Gifted from a young age, he excelled in cultivation, entering the Transcendence Stage at twelve and reaching the Spirit-Concentration Stage by sixteen. A hundred years ago, his father was assigned to Yinzhou by the court, and he accompanied him there. Little did he know that this journey would alter the course of his destiny.
At eighteen, he encountered the woman of his dreams. She appeared in Yinzhou City like a fairy from a storybook, captivating all the unmarried young men in town. Initially, Yin Gongzi only heard about her and was too focused on his cultivation to care about romance. However, after much persuasion from friends, he finally decided to see her for himself. The moment he laid eyes on her, he found himself at a loss for words; none of the poetry he had studied over the years could adequately describe her beauty. All he could think was that she was "a breathtaking sight."
From that day on, like many other young men, Yin Gongzi fell deeply in love. A single day without seeing Yun Girl left him restless and uneasy, causing him to neglect his cultivation. At first, his father thought he was merely taking a break to prepare for a breakthrough in his realm and paid little attention to it. However, when it became clear that his son was not progressing at all, he grew concerned—first scolding him and later even confining him at home. Yet nothing could stop Yin Gongzi from seeking out Yun Girl; eventually, even his father gave up trying to control him.
Yin Gongzi's persistence eventually bore fruit when Yun Girl chose him among many suitors. They enjoyed a blissful period together, but such happiness was fleeting. One day, during a banquet where they drank together, Yun Girl appeared troubled throughout the evening. After much inquiry from Yin Gongzi, she revealed that due to family obligations, she had to leave and return home. It was uncertain whether they would ever meet again. Upon hearing this news, Yin Gongzi felt as if he had fallen into an ice cavern; ultimately, Yun Girl left with tears in her eyes.
Afterward, he painted a portrait of her but found himself unable to express the tender feelings he experienced when he saw her cry. From that moment on, Yin Gongzi fell into despair and stagnation in his cultivation due to the regret of not having written her a poem.
"Alas, I never imagined Brother Yin would have such experiences," Mo Wen said after listening to Yin Gongzi's tale with deep sympathy; it seemed that his own troubles paled in comparison.
"Since then, I have languished for many years until I realized that only by gaining strength could I pursue everything I desired. I began trying to break free from this state and return to my cultivation. However, I struggled to find peace of mind each time and nearly damaged my foundation because of it. It wasn't until I recalled a saying left by our Family Master that led me to today's Poetry Gathering."
