There are two types of people in this world. One type is blessed by the sun from birth, shining brightly wherever they go; the other type walks like a black hole, consuming all light that comes near, including their own. — Lin Yue
Outside, the rain poured relentlessly, crashing against the ground like countless tiny needles piercing the silence of the night. Lin Yue stood at the edge of the terrace of her penthouse, raindrops cascading down her hair, soaking her expensive silk pajamas. She tilted her head slightly back, allowing the rain to wash over her pale cheeks, her short black hair clinging to her scalp.
Looking down, she gazed vacantly at the sixty floors below her. The city lights blurred into a dazzling halo in the rain, resembling an oil painting soaked with tears, heartbreakingly beautiful. The biting cold wind of December cut through her, and the icy rain felt like knives against her exposed skin, yet it could not extinguish the torment and pain deep within her.
Her gaze fell to the scars on her left wrist, where a fresh cut glimmered coldly; blood was washed away by the rain, dripping from her slender fingertips and disappearing into the downpour. How many times had she stood on the edge of life and death? Even she could not remember.
She exhaled softly, her voice so weak it was nearly swallowed by the sound of the rain. A white mist formed briefly in the air before vanishing. Depression followed her like a shadow, an inescapable curse that had entwined itself around her for over twenty years.
To outsiders, she was the glamorous heir of Lin Group, backed by three powerful families, a paragon of envy and a rising star in the investment world. But only she knew that every night she relied on medication to sleep and struggled for a long time each morning to get out of bed. Beneath those perfect smiles captured by media cameras lay countless despair and helplessness.
Lin Yue closed her eyes and leaned forward slightly, feeling the pull of gravity. She was good at calculations and knew how many seconds it would take to fall from this height to the ground. "Maybe if I end everything like this, I can finally be free?" she murmured to herself as she tried to take another step forward, her toes already suspended in midair.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated wildly in her hand. Lin Yue snapped back to reality and instinctively looked down at her phone. The name "Lu Chen" glowed faintly in the darkness on the screen.
"Ah, I actually brought my phone with me..." She forced a bitter smile filled with self-mockery. Lin Yue stared at the flashing screen with no intention of answering. The ringing finally stopped, followed by a message.
"Lin Yue, where are you? The celebration for Dark River has already started; everyone is looking for you. Jiang Rou is going crazy."
The name "Dark River" froze Lin Yue's thoughts in an instant. At that moment, a glaring neon advertisement lit up beside her, and a face appeared before Lin Yue, striking her heart like a jolt of electricity, wrapped in endless pain—Su Yao.
Her gaze involuntarily fell upon that exquisite face, those bright star-like eyes, and the three moles on her neck arranged in a triangle. Those three moles bore witness to their first encounter, their brief sweetness, and ultimately the painful despair that followed.
"Su Yao..." she murmured the name, her throat feeling as if it had been sliced by a blade, rendering her unable to speak. A year ago, their first meeting felt like an eternity ago.
Three hundred days and nights of longing, every detail vivid as if it had just happened—from the initial spark of attraction to the cruel truth at the end. A bitter smile surfaced at the corners of Lin Yue's mouth; the strength she had pretended to possess for so long crumbled in that moment.
"It turns out that heaven has played a cruel joke on me," she chuckled bitterly, allowing her tears to mix with the rain, unable to distinguish between them.
Her phone rang again; this time it was Jiang Rou. Lin Yue hesitated for a few seconds, her trembling fingers gliding across the screen. Jiang Rou's anxious voice came through immediately: "Lin Yue! Where are you? I just got to your house and saw blood in the bathroom—" Jiang Rou's voice choked with emotion, nearly breaking.
"I'm on the rooftop terrace," Lin Yue replied with an unusual calmness.
"Please don’t do anything stupid; I’ll be there soon! I’m already in the elevator!" Jiang Rou screamed, her voice filled with fear.
Lin Yue looked down at the city lights twinkling below her, rain mixed with blood dripping from her fingertips. She suddenly remembered the song Su Yao sang at the charity gala, with lyrics that said, "Even if I fall, I will shine like a star."
"How ridiculous; I've been stripped of any right to love you. How could I ever give you what you want—Brilliant Starlight?" she spoke to herself, her voice heavy with exhaustion and despair.
The iron door behind her was suddenly pushed open with a loud crash.
"Lin Yue! Please come down!" Jiang Rou's scream pierced through the rainy night.
Lin Yue turned around to see Jiang Rou’s terrified face and Lu Chen following closely behind her. Jiang Rou's carefully styled flaxen hair was drenched by the rain, her exquisite makeup ruined, tears streaming down her cheeks. The proud woman was now a picture of disarray, her eyes filled with fear and desperation.
"Xiao Rou..." Lin Yue called softly, feeling a wave of dizziness wash over her.
Blood loss blurred her vision as her legs gave way beneath her. She felt herself falling, like a shooting star streaking across the night sky.
In the final moment before her consciousness faded, what flashed before her eyes was not the panicked figures of Jiang Rou and Lu Chen rushing towards her, but the bright, star-like eyes of Su Yao and the sweet smile she wore when looking at her.
If only... I could see you one more time...
Even if it were just once...
This was the last thought of Lin Yue before she lost consciousness.
